    Tussigon(Hacking cough)

My dear old Corgi(17 years old) is barely making it around. I do give her twice a day, glusocomyne(the same as I take) and that does help her... Some months ago, she started this "cigarette coughing"... a dry hacking cough. Does not have valley fever/urininary OK.. /blood work OK/no heart worms. Vet said possibly due to old age and an enlarged heart. Started giving her TUSSIGON.. and it helps.. problem is that when the prrescription ran out, the coughing started again which means it may be that I have to give it to her forever... It is a big expensive.

Anyone know of any other place to purchase Tussigon other than a Vet's office?

Do not know of Children's Robussin would work or not...... Norm

My older dog Bear would hack like a smoker too. The vet told me his trachea was collapsing. I tried giving him Tussigon but it really didn't help much. He really wasn't in any pain so I stopped using it. As long as he didn't get excited or try to bark a lot, he was OK. There really isn't much that can help at that age. Bear was 14 when he had three heart attacks in a row and went to the Bridge. He had always had an enlarged heart and his diabetes strained it further.

Children's cough syrup can't hurt if you don't overdo it. But it isn't a cure. It will mostly make YOU feel better.

If your dog has an enlarged heart then it should be on medications such as enalapril which help reduce the work load on the heart. Sedating the cough doesn't help the heart. Presumably one could purchase Tussigon online, but you would still need a Vet's prescription to fax in. Again that drug isn't going to do much to help the underlying heart condition.

Get a referral to a doggy specialist.

I've got to agree on the Enalapril, my 14 year old Pom has been taking it for several years now. Her symptom was coughing, especially when she was excited. She had an enlarged heart when she was checked at the vet and she's been taking the Enalapril since. She takes it twice a day and it works well for her.

You can get a prescription for it from your vet, since its a people medication and get it filled at a discount pharmacy. I fill it at Walmart and it only costs me $8 a month.
