System Shutdown?

My computer gets a system shutdown message that gives me a one minute countdown to log off and close everything every time I open MSN. Is it a virus or what?

It's probably sasser or some derivative of sasser.

If you don't have anti virus software running on your comp it will get infected as soon as you hook into the network if there is a version of sasser (or numerous other) viruses in the wild on that net.

Yeah. I need to download AVG asap. It's the Blaster-Worm virus, right? At least it tells how to get rid of it.

Well, heres my 2-cents worth...

Like previously mentioned, any antivirus is only as good as its most recent update, as an antivirus is just that - its to prevent a virus, but not necessairly help to clean it out once an infection has occurred.

Having said that, once a virus is detected in your computer - depending on the virus type (virus, worm, trojan, etc.), theres several ways to tackle the problem. Could you give us a little information>

- What was the full name of the infected file that it found (filename.***)
- What was the full virus name?
- What operating system do you have (windows xp home, windows 2000, etc.)?
- What is the antivirus you currently have on your computer, the software version, and what is the date of the virus definitions (the most recent update?)

This way we could help to point you in the right direction for removal -- and depending on the problem, Symantec (Norton) has a ton of free tools on the website to help remove the problem.

I'd be more than happy to give you a hand to the best of my abilities - i used to work for an antivirus company as tech support for virus removal -- can't guarantee that I can fix it, but i might be able to help

The link has what's affected; The Virus is the Blaster Worm I think; Windows XP Home; I don't have one since I just readded the internet.. But I'm downloading AVG free 7.5, and I guess it's updated since I just downloaded it. I'm downloading the "patch" that Microsoft has for the Blaster Worm virus, so I'll see if it works.

Okay, so how do you disable system restore?

System REstore: click on Start
Then click on Help and Support.

Somewhere on there, you will see System Restore. It is on the left on my PC.

You have to have a restore point set up already. You should see a calendar which will identify restore points for you. Take a guess as to when the virus came in, and restore to a point before that.

I was just going to system restore the whole thing, because it worked the last time I had a killer virus that was destroying my computer, but I'll just follow what the symantec site says and I'll also run AVG while I'm running it just to make sure I'm getting everything. Thanks for all the help!

The symantec thing said the blaster worm was gone, so the patch hopefully fixed it.

Just a few suggestions:

Download AdAware from Lavasoft. The personal edition is free for home use. That will stop some popups and is a decent spyware removal tool when used in conjunction with Spybot search and Destroy.

They are both free programs, but they both update the spyware/adware definitions on a regular basis.

They virus scanner in conjunction with the spyware programs normally keeo systems pretty clean.
