We're going to the white coats tonight

Little miss Sierra thinks my back yard is her jungle gym
I have wooden pallets laying down flat in my yard, up against the fence that faces Blizzards yard (for those that don't know... Blizzard is the dog next door that has destroyed my fence and had bitten both dogs several times )
Well, as you know these pallets have slats (spaces) and she was running around on them and lost her footing and her foot fell between the slats and her dewclaw caught and I don't know if it's partially torn off or if she has a sliver that I can't see but it's become quite nasty. This happened on Sunday (the 2nd) but it's never been very painful or really bothered her at all except for some licking, but the more she licks the more fur comes off and the worse it's looking. So we're going today at 5:00.
I've attached some pics, but it's hard to see. It's her right front.
You can see how the swelling has made it stick out instead of laying flat against her leg like her left front.
And Bud's going with us too because he needs his 3 year rabies shot.

Dewclaws are painful, and can rip. The only one of mine that has them is Femka but she was whelped in the Netherlands, and they do not change the dog in appearance. I imported a shepherd once from Germany that had them. He caught them all the time, and they didnt stick out but laid flat mostly like your dog does.
They can stitch the skin under it and might choose to do so. They can not be removed without major operation as they dew claw bone attaches to leg about 2 months old. Most breeders remove this dew claws at 3 days old. Some for appearance sake, but more so for safety reasons.
Keep us posted- I am sorry she got hurt. Let us know what the vet says they can do. If the claw is not attached to the leg ( rare but can happen) they can take it off. But not if the bone is attached to the leg bone..

I hope Sierra will be just fine in time. My Lilly is the only one I have whose Dew claws were removed when she was a puppy. I'm so glad. It is less toenails to trim for her and she is HORRIBLE about having her nails clipped!

Keep us posted on how Sierra is doing.

Those dewclaws can make for some nasty injuries. I hope the vet can get her fixed up! Let us know how she's doing.

Whino has ripped his dew claw completely out several times but it has never swelled up. I hope the vet fixes her up.

Ouchie! Star ripped her dewclaw a few years ago. After some antibiotics and a loose bandage for a few days she was OK, hopefully it will be that easy with Sierra too. Poor pup.

    Thank you Wolf_Q!
