Our good friend, Bea (Iditarod Fan), who hasn't been on Pet Talk in a while, needs our prayers for her precious Molly G. Here is what she wrote on Jackie's community.
am so sad to report Molly G. has a kidney disease. Because she started to drink excessively, eat little, and once peed on the carpet, right in front of me, and never ever had she peed inside before, we visited her regular vet ( Dr. J. ) thinking she had diabetes. She tested her for diabetes and no that wasn't it. So, she drew 2 vials of blood and sent Molly and I outside to get a urine sample. She said, "Well, she go pee for you." I said, "Yes, but not on command." LOL So I easily held the cup under her as she releaved herself. Then Dr. J. sent the blood & the urine into the lab. That was Tuesday of last week. Friday, I learned she has kidney failure! Most of the Protein she is getting is washing out in her urine. And she has a low serum (?) count of 1.9..... with 2.5 being normal and 1.5 critical. Scarey!!! Then Dr. J. consulted with Molly's opthomalogist who said the amount of topical Prednisolone and Demarcarium she is getting in her good eye for glaucoma would NOT damage her kidney. So it seems that is more than likely she has one of two kinds of kidney desease: (1) Glomerulonet Phritis or (2) Amyloidosis.
So what do we do? We can have a Internal specialist do a renal biopsy for $1000+ or a Abdominal Ultrasound for $475 to $575 which neither will change the outcome or treatment! So Dr. J. suggested we start her on a diet for dogs with kidney problems. As of today we are feeding her commercialized K/D Prescription, canned dog food. And some kind of dry dog food which Dr. J. gave me a sample of and I don't know the name of it, because she gave it to me in a coffee tin. LOL If Molly G. turns her pretty, little nose up at the commercialized food I will have to Make her Dog Food! (Shanlee, oh Shanlee, where are thee?) The recipes are found in Dr. Donald R. Strombeck's (DVM PHD) book: Home Preparation -Dog and Cat Diet, published through the Iowa State University Press. If anyone is interested you can order it through WWW,ISUPRESS.EDU or by calling 1-800-862-6657. I hear it is expensive.
Well, skin pals and furbabies that is all the emotion I have left tonight. I am drained! But before I go to hug Molly goodnight I have to tell you what she did earlier in the evening. My son came in and so I went into the kitchen to talk with him. Bad me, I left a chocolate, junkfood, Ding Dong, lying on the couch. When I returned Molly was lapping up the last yummy crumbs. Oh well, if she dies tonight at least she will die happy. What a little sneak!
