"Baking Bread, Kneading...." What do you call it?

You know what I mean....when kitties alternately "push" and "pull" their claws into/onto a surface. Its generally accepted that this is a left-over behavior from when they nursed as kittens and "kneaded" Mommy's belly to keep the milk flowing.

But what do YOU call it? A dear friend of mine years ago just out of the blue started calling it "Toe-Toe, Knit-Knit" because they push their little toe pads down first, then "knit" the claws in second! That name has forever stuck for me and so many people I know now use that term. I think its hysterical!

So, does anyone have any other special names for it and does anyone know the correct "Vet-accepted" term?

In our house, we call it "making biscuits" or "kneading bread".

It seems like its only our 2 male cats (aged 1 year and 11 years) that "make biscuits", our 2 female cats (aged 1 year and 3 years) do not.

I have done a little checking.

Crazy for Kitties says its called "milk-kneading", and it gives a few other names for it: kneading, trampling, or pitty-patting.

We call it "bädda" here in Sweden, which basically means making the bed.

My boyfriend (he's American) calls it "fancy feet".

It's funny, Ann, I call it also making the bed, but, well, in Spanish: hacer la cama !!!

When I came to this board I noticed that action was called "making biscuits" or "kneading bread", which never occured to me! I love these little differences!

    Is it kneading????

My Karamel does that too!!! He doesn't do it to me though. When he was very tiny (1 month) i had put a piece of warm and soft cloth under him. And now if i put it in his basket, he starts kneading with a very concentrated (even angry) look in his face and he carries the whole thing out of the room, even into the kitchen. Is it kneading or something else? I always thought he didn't like the touch of the fabric and he was trying to get rid of it. So i never put it in his basket now.

Attached is a photo of him. (I really want everybody to say "what a cute kitty!!!" )

Oh, ganime, he is a cutie! I love that little quizzical expression he has on his face. He's adorable.

Terry once called it "that heel and toe thing." He used to race cars and "heel and toeing" was a term they used for downshifting. Then again he calls Peanut his little "toe-out" kitty too. "Toe-out" has to do with the alignment of a car's tires, and when she sits up pretty like, her little front paws point outward. So I guess I've got a little racer kitty.

I've always called it kneading because it's like kneading bread.

Thanks everybody for your warm appreciation of my kitty!!!
I want to apologize for unknowingly posting my reply to this thread, instead of creating a new one. I thought by posting a subject, I had started a new thread.

But again thanks you all for your kind words about my kitty. I will nominate him as COTD one of these days

Bassett "kneaded" me today - I always feel insulted; as if I'm not soft enough! However, I wear an insulin pump, and I'm always afraid she will pull out the infusion set when she gets going!
