Malimar, you're such a handsome kitty with a beautiful long tux! I know age is not a nice thing to deal with, but you seem to be doing so with the grace and dignity a kitty of your stature would!

Happy COTD to you, honey, have the MOST SPECIAL DAY!!

    Kidney Failure Tips

Hi there - I am sorry that your cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure but I can tell you that it is not necessary to only feed the bland foods that the vet sells. My beloved cat Beyli survived 4 years after being diagnosed (after many misdiagnoses) because he ate well - even according to my vet, who told me that the quality of the food I was feeding him was better than what she sells (Science Diet, etc.). I gave him Wellness, Evo, By Nature Organic, Merrick - all canned food because with this disease they really need fluids and they don't get it from dry food at all and cats never drink enough (well documented research). I also gave Beyli a Fortekor (half) (aka Benazepril) per day and an antacid (Pepcid or Famotidine). He got his SubQ fluids once every 3-4 days and this also helped his appetite (and he never got upset when I administered them - I was very lucky). You can get alot of supportive information on www.felinecrf.org and there is also a mailing list to join and get information. Remember, no matter how much you love your vet, it is a business - the people on this mailing list are from all over the world, have been through what you are going through and have different solutions that do take the love for your cat at heart.

I wish you all the best and a long life together still.
Please have your pets sterilized as soon as possible to lower, and one day hopefully eliminate, unwanted and abandoned pets. It IS our responsibility. Adopting from a shelter also helps - encouraging breeders just adds to the overpopulation.

Happy Cat of the Day to you, beautiful Malimar! What a handsome, dashing, debonair Tuxie you are, sweetheart! Such a beautiful boy, inside and out! I'm sorry to hear of your health challenges, Malimar. So many of us here can realte to your Mom's distress at hearing the news. But as well, so many of us know that with the proper diet and treatment, it's possible to live many happy years with CRF! And it's clear your devoted Mommy is committed to doing all in her power to assure that and she will be together for many years to come! (And though she might now admit it, your sister needs you there too, to keep her in line!) Heartfelt congrats, lots of love and cuddles to you on your much deserved day of honor, beautiful Malimar! I hope that you and your fursis Ratzie both, are enjoying a very special day of celebration, being spoiled rotten and loved to pieces...just as you are every day!

    Hi From Sue in Aussieland!

    Hi Malimar's Mum,

What a beautiful cat you have - I too would like to add a little about Kidney failure as did one of the previous Pet Talkers.

I am a retired Veterinary Nurse and am quite dismayed at the level of ignorance in the cat community regarding the correct carnivour diet.

Cats are obligate carnivores (raw meat eaters) and unfortunately we have fallen into the trap of feeding them biscuits and tinned foods which are more convenient to us mainly because of our fast lifestyles today, However these foods are high in salt especially the biscuits, because cats would never eat a buiscuit so there has to be an incentive and that is salt.

Cats in the wild rarely need water, they derive their fluids from their kills (the stomach fluids)! But today we have to give them water because they are so thirsty - and to put it simply their kidneys can's cope with this amount of water, it is a vicious cycle. And this usually leads to kidney failure in our feline friends along with urinary tract infections especially in male cats who have a diet of biscuits alone.

So it is imperative to give your cat raw meats, especially chicken and some fish. They will not be interested in the beef type meats - too strong in flavour. So now because your cat has kidney failure you need to accept the processed foods that the vet has recommended because it has the correct nutrients to sustain your Malimar.

It is a huge task to educate the public about the correct cat nutrition simply because the veterinary profession sell and recommend processed foods because they reap the benefits of animal teeth cleaning and other problems associated with processwed food intake. It may sound cynical but it is a competative world for our veterinary practitioners believe me!

    Best Wishes - Sue Kelly.
