Don't Worry, Pit Bulls Aren't the Only Breed Discriminated

My friends and I (including my husband) are going to be moving into a new apartment together soon. Well, we found one, but I would have to leave my car at my parents. Which is fine, but I was still looking for other apartments just in case. Well, I found THE perfect one, but they have a list of dog breeds that aren't allowed. Guess who's on there. DALMATIANS. -.- I kind of figured. Bad breedings have given dalmatians a slightly bad name. -.- UGH!

Around here Huskies are on the list and so are German Shepherds. Its hard to find an apartment that will allow you to have either one of these breeds along with American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Doberman Pinscher, Chow Chow, Rottie, Shar pei.

The last place we looked at said that they wish they could ban poodles from their complex....well as a poodle owner I got up and left right then.

(Poodles are starting to get a pretty bad rep though it seems, again bad breeding and irresponsible owners that won't train their dogs)

I love our current place, they do it basically on a case by case basis. And if for some reason you have a mix breed that is say Lab/Rottie or Lab/Pit bull.....all they care to know about is the lab....you can't prove what a mutt is so they just don't care. (They tend to overlook at times again though its a case by case basis on any dog they let in from Chihuahuas to Great Danes)

I like our apartment we have now because they don't really have anything against dogs. The dogs can be any size or breed. But I extremely dislike them for other reasons!!! Long story. Lol

The other place we are moving to said they just don't want giant dogs like bull mastiffs, etc. The only sucky thing is with four people and four (actually five but I'm making my husband sell one) cars... we're only allowed three. But we can make do.

It's more like bad OWNERS have given any breed a bad reputation. Too many owners can't or won't recognize that their dog is controling them. Too many owners that let their dogs do whatever they want, whenever and wherever they want. I've noticed with our clients that the ones who have the poorly behaved dogs that run the owners, and misbehave something awful, usually have kids doing the same thing.

That also has to do with it. But the major inbreeding that has occurred with dalmatians mostly after 101 Dalmatians has made them rather unsure of themselves. If dalmatians do not get a lot of socialization when young and are not introduced to new things all the time, they become very suspicious and do not know how to deal with situations. This is also partially just how dalmatians are. When the dogs in her basic class were introduced to a walker, everyone was fine with it. Some were more wary than others, but they were all fine. Delta barked... a lot. Lol I had to get a walker and acclimate her to it for a day.

But you are right, owners don't realize this of their dalmatians and so when they do get in a bad situation, they don't know what to do, and may very likely snap.

Dalmatians are on the "no-rent" list at several places here, as well. As are huskies.

Size matters large dogs are not allowed at most pet friendly places that
allow pets. most Motel/hotels that are pet friendly limit the size to 30/40 pounds. I really don't see what difference the size of the pet makes, since
they allow people and/or kids to be any size.

Oh no, this place didn't have a weight limit, it had a list of breeds that were and were not allowed. Lots of hotels/motels are beginning to allow bigger dogs because they realize people want to travel with their larger dogs too.

It's honestly ridiculious how so many dogs are now being discriminated. I once looked up a list of all the dogs under ANY BSL law in the country and pugs were on there, PUGS! Boston terriers, beagles, you name it. I don't know how legitimate it was but it made me very livid. This country is already about political correctness, why not just add on to the heap?

I have always hoped, someday maybe a case will make it all the way up to the Supreme Court and they can rule it Unconstitutional. I don't believe that there is nothing we can do, I never have. I will always have the bleak hope that maybe someday we'll get our justice for this. This country was founded on the ideals of freedom and liberty. Yet, we get our choice of dog breeds taken away from us. It's just so sickly hypocritical, that I hope one day a smart politician (Do those even exist?) will push for a change. I have written letters to Washington, during both the bush and now Obama administration on this issue and have recieved nothing in return. Not that I expected anything, but I had hoped. State-wise, I have recieved the same treatment. LUCKILY, for now, BSL laws are only on the state-level. They have no reached federal highs yet that I know of. But if we don't put a stop to it soon, we might now be able to stop it from getting there.

I hear what you are saying,Luckily were i am we dont get much of that.Its moreless like a Childrens Aid (CAS) deal around here,I have had neighbors call the township on me for the dogs barking.There is Bylaws..When the lad showed up,The dogs barked at him and after he was in the house they all calmed down.I did not get mad at him he was doing his job,But from observing the situation,He said if there was any other calls he would just throw them away.My dogs bark..Only when someone pulls into the driveway or knocks on our door.And im fine with that.But you get the neighbors who have NO animals,and every little thing ticks them off.In life you will never be able to keep every person happy.Which is fine by me.


Luckily being in the country you dont get much of a hassle,But i know the bigger cities around me have by laws,I think it is only against Pit Bulls..Which is silly..Around here we are surrounded by Pitts..and they are all great friendly dogs..Im not sure what law is out on them,Only one im aware of is the muzzling..When out in public. You have to have them muzzled.I really do not pay much attention,if i did my blood would be boiling 24/7.

We can hope for change...Canada is different then the USA.We dont have all these restrictions like some places in the states,for that im happy.I truly feel for the ones that have to deal with the discrimintation on a daily basis!

It is so rotten that there's a restriction on breed or size no matter what the cause is. Like someone said above... i feel like it is unconstitutional. I do understand that there are some rotten dogs out there, but on the same hand I feel like it should be taken on a case by case basis. I think possible landlords should at least take the time out to meet these animals and their humans so not to automatically rule out the possibility of having one of the best tenants they could have asked for. I think that a landlord should put a restriction on the number of animals at a home and/or put in their lease agreement that the dog needs to be confined while the tenant is not home.
