Can you guys do me a favor?

If you have time, will you tell me if this magic number trick works for you?
make sure you have a calculator if you're going to try it..
    thanks

    -Pick a number between 1 and 10.
    -add 3.
    -double it.
    -take away 5.
    -add 7.
    -subtract 4.
    -multiply by 10.
    -divide by 20.
    -take away 7.
    -give back 10.
    -take away 3 more.

    (edit: thanks William!)
Whatever you come out with *should* be your original number plus 2.

    Sorry, didn't work.

    starting with 3 yields 5, 2 yields 4

(this is Devon, by the way)

hmm. it seems to vary depending on the kind of calculator you use. if you try it on the type that solves after every two numbers you type, it usually doesnt work.. but if you use a calculator which waits until you're finished with the whole equation to solve it, it does.. I'm pretty sure it works when you solve it algebraically, so.. I guess I'll wait for a couple more responses and see how it worked out for others and then see what I did wrong-- thanks for trying it out

(on the two calculators I tried it on, 5 yields 11 and 2 yields 8)

Didn't work for me either - I chose 7 and had 9 in the end.

That's so weird! haha. We've tried it on four different calculators and it's worked. oh well, Start over! xD; It's for a small part of this project that we have to do for the math I'm taking.

    I quite like Math actually
using your algorithm you should end up with your original number plus two, not six

Let's say your original number is x

    -add 3.
    x + 3

    -double it.
    2x + 6

    -take away 5.
    2x + 1

    -add 7.
    2x + 8

    -subtract 4.
    2x + 4

    -multiply by 10.
    20x + 40

    -divide by 20.
    x + 2

    -take away 7.
    x - 5

    -give back 10.
    x + 5

    -take away 3 more.
    x + 2

Thank you! Yes, that's exactly what I found in the end of the simplified column. (n+2) I was confused, since technically, it SHOULD end up being their original number plus two. But on all the calculators we tried, it ended up as six more than the original number. However, it seems to be working as two more for everyone else. If it does work that way, then I don't have to restart after all xD; the only thing that confused me was the outcome of the experiments. Other than that, I'm glad to hear my simplified algebra wasn't off. haha.

in that case, there must be something wrong with your calculators
