Prayers for Angie; 4-10 Update, Post #13

Angie is a bichon owned by my librarian friend, Sharon. She weighs about 14 pounds. Sharon also owns Bailey, a toy poodle.

Five days ago, Sharon was getting ready to take the dogs for their regular morning walk; at 5:30 AM. She had both dogs outside and was bending over Angie to fix her leash.

A neighbor walks her rottie every morning as well. Angie saw them and took off to meet and greet the rottie. Unfortunately, the rottie did not realize what Angie was doing and attacked her, while still on the leash. Really tore up her neck and throat area.

Angie has been at the specialist / ER hospital for the last 5 days. She is not yet standing. They are considering whether to do an MRI or wait some more for swelling to go down.

Both owners are traumatized, needless to say.

Most likely I won't get an update for a week (when next I go to the library). But I know Angie would appreciate any prayers said on her behalf.

    Thank you.

Prayers have been sent for Angie and her owner.
    How sad for everyone involved.

I spoke with Sharon earlier today and got this update.

They brought Angie home on Friday about 2 PM. She is not able to stand. They can prop her up, she holds it a second and topples over. She cannot potty, they need to express manually. The vet now suspects some spinal damage, it seems she can't feel or move her left side, not either the rear or the front leg. She is eating and drinking.

They are looking into physical therapy as a possibility. The vet has told them the next 1 to 2 weeks will tell them whether she is going to recover.

Sharon has the link to this prayer thread, and appreciates any prayers for her Angie. Sharon kept saying she wishes she could take back that split second when she unhooked the leash and Angie got away from her.

HUGE PT Prayers that some physical therapy and just plain healing will bring Angie back to health...even a limp would be okay, as long as she is better.

Are there any supplements that help this sort of thing? Omega oil, B vitamins?

I just hope she isn't in too much pain.

Nothing. The rottie was on leash at all times; Angie was the one running loose; the leash was in Sharon's hand. The rottie hasn't been an issue in the past. It is just one of those horrendous accidents.

How is expressing going? Is Angie taking pred? How about crate rest? Sharon needs to be on the neuro and incontinence bbs at http://handicappedpet.net/help/ . The 1 to 2 week recovery bit is WRONG--recovery can continue for up to a couple of years.

I went in to the library today and spoke with Sharon.

Angie is doing VERY well. She can walk, go to the bathroom herself, runs a bit. Sometimes gets wobbly on the hard wood floors and they see her stop and push her legs further apart to balance, then she is off again! They are not letting her do stairs yet. Tonight she has an appt with the physical therapy place, as she does drag one rear foot a little, just now and then. All in all, a terrific recovery!

I was surprised to learn Angie has NO stitches! This was not a rip / tear wound. There is one primary puncture wound and a few smaller puncture wounds, and Sharon said it was a miracle they missed the carotid artery. The area was shaved down, and there is a lot of bruising. Of course she has the shaved area on the front leg where she had the IV etc. Hair has started growing in both places. There are a few scraping type areas on her back, which Sharon thinks are from the rottie owner trying to pull her dog OFF and hence dragging Angie on the road. Minor stuff, wouldn't have even needed vet care, per Sharon. So the puncture wounds are the main thing.

Angie is back to walking in the morning with her doggie brother, Bailey! They are not putting a collar on her as that is the area which is so bruised. On one walk, Sharon said Angie saw her "black lab friend, and took off dashing right up to him, so she hasn't learned that is not a good thing to do." Angie and the lab play together. So, it seemed like a harness was a good choice. (I loaned Sharon a 2 step harness until she can decide what she wants to get for Angie. I showed Sharon the link on PetEdge for the ones I use.)

Sharon has been looking at this thread and really appreciates all the prayers and support. She asked me to that all of you!! She really believes the prayers helped get Angie to this point. YAHOO!Q!!
