New Jersey police seek burly brunette in car burglary
He’s hairy, drooly, has a serious sweet tooth, and he’s wanted by Vernon Township, N.J., police.
That, and his penchant for leaving behind evidence, should make him easy to find. But there’s one problem: He’s a black bear.
According to Det. Sean Talt of the Vernon Township Police Department, police officer Dave Dehardt was on patrol early Wednesday morning when he discovered an SUV by the side of the road.
The passenger window had been broken, Talt said, and the door panels were damaged.
“We had a rash of thefts in that area, satellite radios taken and stuff,” Talt said. “He thought that this was a victim vehicle that had not been reported yet.”
Inside, Dehardt discovered several candy wrappers, dirt, drool and one other important clue.
“He determined it was a bear because of all the bear hair inside,” Talt said.
But the culprit created even more havoc.
“Apparently, the bear had also accidentally released the emergency brake and allowed the vehicle to roll away 40 or 50 feet away from the [owner’s] house,” Talt said.
The bear was probably attracted by candy inside the car, he said.
“We’ve had animals break into houses,” he said. “But this is the first time we’ve ever had an animal take the car like that.”
Police have released a Wanted poster (pictured), but Talt emphasizes they just want to talk to the suspect.
“He’s only an animal of interest right now,” Talt said.
