Have you ever cut dog's nails before? If you haven't I recommend you take him to a groomer or a Vet. Dogs have a vein that run thru their nails and if you don't know how to look for it then you could very easily cut it and make him bleed horribly.

If your dogs nails are clear it is very easy to cut them with out
    hitting the quick.
If their black as Kay suggested go to a Vet or a groomer.
Than ask them to show you how to cut them.

My dogs nails are black, so I have to cut a little at a time.
I even try to take a flash light and shine it on the nail so I
can make out the quick. But that is not full proof.

My vet charges 9.00 its a bargain, casey does not like her nails to be trimmed.
don't breed or buy while shelter dogs die....
