Help! Bad Breath!

Heya guys.

I got a new foster dog over the weekend. He's a Rat Terrier.
I don't have any vet records or background on him, other then what his previous owners told me.

At any rate, he seems in good health and he's going to the vet this week, he will need all the vacs and to be neutered.

However, his breath smells terribly bad to me. It smells like musky dog pee, not like ammonia. And when he licks himself, it causes the rest of him to smell like doggie pee!

We just gave him a thorough bath on Saturday and the dirt was pouring off of him, so we know he needed it.

We've been giving him good chew treats like Greenie's and getting him used to having his teeth brushed.

What else can I do to help this breath problem? He LOVES to lick, so he's always got his tongue in my face.

You can take him to the vet to have his teeth cleaned and maybe the vet has better advice... I am not a vet so I wouldn't know, I am not a dog expert either maybe some more people would have better advice than mine

His teeth and gums are in excellent condition, and he's only 1 1/2 years old. I don't feel it is anything like that.
It isn't "bad breath" from tartar or an infection of the mouth.
It's bad breath that smells like puppy pee, lol.

Eww that is gross, lol I would call a vet and ask for some advice keep us updated.

maybe it's the food he eats. what do you feed them

We just switched him to Nutro Natural ULTRA. He was on Purina One. But even since the night we got him (Last Saturday) he's smelled this way.

It is slightly better since his bath, but it's coming back.

Just to be on the safe side, get him into a vet asap.

sending him to vet is better. the bad breath could also caused by gastrointestinal diseases .

If his mouth is fine, it's probably something inside his body that's causing his breath to be bad. Like pethop said, gastrointestinal disease can cause bad breath. If the vet doesn't find anything wrong, I'd recommend giving him lots of chews. Raw bones, nylabones, kongs, etc. You can also feed him fresh parsley and cranberry.
