Chaucer my 8 year old tabby. We have a game we play. were i say Something and he responds and we get in to a conversation.

Crystal my 11 year old cat and I kinda do the same thing, like if she wants something or if she tries to get my attention she'll say "Ma" to me and then i'll follow her and go and see what she wants and if it's not clear to what she wants then she'll just make me follow her to what she wants, but i can usually figure it out just by the way she meows to me

Thats the same with Chaucer Except when he meows it usally means i need fooood.
