I have never owned a cat, because I'm allergic to them. I do know, however, from several bad experiences with stray cats, that my dogs view cats the same way the view rabbits, gophers, birds and snakes .... as a snack.
I know there is nothing I could ever do to train this out of my dogs. Their prey drive is too strong.
My sister's dogs are the same way ... in fact they killed her cat. A long story, with my sister at fault to be sure ... but nonetheless, the cat was killed.
I have seen a few examples of cats and dogs that truly seem to love each other, and a lot of examples of dogs and cats living in an uneasy, forced truce ... and a lot of examples of dogs like mine, where no cat is safe.
I don't really have any advice, I just wanted to mention my experiences and say to be careful and keep a close eye on the situation. Dogs can and do kill cats, and they don't have to be huge dogs to do it.
"We give dogs the time we can spare, the space we can spare and the love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made" - M. Facklam
"We are raised to honor all the wrong explorers and discoverers - thieves planting flags, murderers carrying crosses. Let us at last praise the colonizers of dreams."- P.S. Beagle
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king." - J.R.R. Tolkien
