    Molly's Glaucoma

Hi guyz Don't have much time on the puter these days. And I have some scary news from Molly's opthamalogist. Seems the pressure in her good eye is increasing. Two years ago she lost sight in her right eye due to glaucoma. Now the doc says we have to watch it close. If it continues to increase we can do 1 of 3 things. (1) Add a 3rd drop to her other two daily drops. (2) Take her to Seattle & have laser eye surgery. Problem is it usually needs to be periodically repeated and isn't always successful. (3) Take her to Seattle and have a shunt surgically implanted. Problem is dogs genetics usually react as if there is a foreign object in the eye. So it acts defensively by building fibrous material around the shunt. Hard to understand. Need to no more about this option.
In the meantime he wrote me an "EMERGENCY PRESCRIPTION" since Glaucoma can increase suddenly. She could be seeing at 7pm and be blind by 7:30. Sure hope I recognize the symtoms in time to help her!!!!!!!!!!

I too am very sorry to hear about Molly. I don't think I have ever heard of a dog with glaucoma but I have definitely had dogs with cataracts which is normally just an age-related problem.

I work for an ophthalmologist and it sounds like the treatment described is what would be done for Molly's human counterparts. Many of our patients do quite well on drops alone, but many need to go further with laser surgery. For the shunts we refer out to a subspecialist so I am not too knowledgeable about that treatment. Please know that Molly is in our thoughts and prayers as well as you for wisdom as to what to do. Keep us posted.

My prayers are with you and Molly. I think I'd go with the first choice, too. The other two seem to have drawbacks. I'd do that and monitor closely to see if laser surgery might be a close second option. Good luck!

Bea, I know nothing about this sort of thing, but please know that I will keep Molly in my prayers and wish nothing but the best for her, whatever you decide to do.

    Please be ok, Molly!!
