    How dogs see=How dogs behave

Interesting 'doggie' research has been done at the Vet Dpt of Sydney University.
It explains why some dog breeds chase things & other breeds
prefer to attentively gaze into their owner's face. The 2 types have
2 different patterns of vision cells in their eyes. The pattern in the
'chasers' gives them a wider field of vision. The pattern in the
more 'focused' is bundled in the centre of the eye giving them a
    more 'focused' field of vision.

And these patterns match nose lengths...longer nose equals
wide field of vision, shorter nose equals focused vision. In the
program, the first was represented by an Australian Cattle Dog & the
second by a Pug. The first group are hunters & fetchers & chasers while the
    second are lap-dogs-house- dogs.

It explained something for me. We'd always had working dog
breeds....Border Collies, Shelties, Blue Heelers (all long noses,
wide fields of vision). Then at a dog show I walked into a line of
Tibetan Spaniels (short noses, focused field of vision). I was
really taken with the Tibbies because, as I told my family, they
'look into your face the same way a person would.' Now I know
    they do...& why!

Here's the full transcript of a TV Science Program about this research.

    Angels3,

Thanks for the article. It's very interesting. I didn't know that
dogs could see the color red ,nor did I realize that the eye
structure varied so much between dog breeds. This certainly
explains why some dogs love a good game of fetch & others
don't. Dog's vision fields vary a lot. It was a good read. Liz.

Glad you liked the info, folks!

Phred, you sure can talk the Aussie talk now! For a minute there, I thought Steve Irwin had joined the list (by the way, his home & his crocodiles are just up the road from me.)

You're right...I can hardly wait to join the Big Mouth's Club. We call it Having the Gift of the Gab. Do you say that, too?

And I see there's someone else who likes the Dixie Chicks...great music.

Beautiful weather up here in Queensland. We had to turn the air-conditioning on last week.

Freezing??? What's that? Snow??? What's that?

The Dixie Chicks are fine musicians. I think they toured Australia recently (for the second time?)

Wolfsong....I love your doggie, Timber. Looks like a sheltie with much substance. Nice long nose, too!

    So, another Dixie Chicks affectionado.
Psssssst, folks....have a look for Canadian female group called
The Be Good Tanyas. Their CD 'Blue Horse' has a song called 'dogsong' written by one of the group about the passing of her own beloved dog. Beautiful....should be played at all doggie events.

Thanks! She doesn't even have any sheltie in her lol.

Yes I love Dixie Chicks. I'm a big fan of country, I grew up on it. Most of my family is made up of "cowboys." They all wear cowboy hats and boots and jeans and the whole deal!
