    shepherd ????help!!!

i used to have a shepherd mix,but i never knew what he was mixed with. if i tell you what he looked like post pics ot tell me what you think he was mixed with....i have always wondered what he was mixed with.....

he was a med. sized dog 50-60 lbs.
his ears were up and looked like a g.shepherd's
he was all tanish white w/ a black mask
    his tail was long
    he had short hair
he had a very loving temperment, and was protective
he was very very smart and jumped very high.

what was his mix? i know he had german shepherd in him, because he looked just like one, just he was shorter, and carried himself like he was fat.

    it stumped me

those pics look like belgian malinois. Are you familiar with the breed? They have short fur, can jump ten feet in the air while standing, are very protective and excell at shutzhund and obedience. Here are pics:

    Possibly a kelpie?

It's possible he may have been purebred...but doubtful. Belgian malinois are exceptionally expensive due to their rising popularity. If you watch a shutzhund show, you are bound to see them pop up everywhere, as they are now seen as the best, even better than German shepherds who were once seen as the greatest.

Where did you get him? A backyard breeder might not know for sure the background of their dog, and a shelter may not know either. I've known backyard breeders who simply don't even mention a few of the breeds in the pups, for no reason.

If you go here you can view a 15 minute video of belgian malinios, I have this one downloaded myself

    Thanks bnormal

You said your dog was shorter/fatter then a german shepard. The belgian malinois look like they are somewhat taller/leaner then a german shepard.

lute said that the dog was shorter but carried himself like he was fat, not that he was fatter

Shepherds and malinois are actually the same size, around 24-26 inches at the withers, and malinois actually would carry themselves like they are fat because they have a very square build, whereas german shepherds are more lean. GSDs are smooth curved, and mailois are sharply angled

Malinois aren't rare They weren't common a few years ago, but like I said, shutzhund seems to be putting them on the map! I'm glad, they are a great breed. There was one here a while back, but it wasn't well bred and was oversized, it was HUGE. Crazy..

What was your dog's temperment like? Malinois are herding dogs, so they should work very well along with people. They are generally well with smaller animals, but they need very proper socialization with dogs at an early age, as they are a dominant breed, and aggression-prone. They act quite alot like a higher energy, quicker and more agile German shepherd.
