    Animal Welfare Act

I received this email today asking people to help push for laws that would require kennels to keep records of vet care....

    Your Help is Needed Now!!

Amber's leg had been broken when it was caught in the wires of a cage at a commercial kennel. She did not get veterinary care so it healed crooked. She was suffering from malnutrition, an ear infection and skin infections.

The USDA is proposing revisions to the Animal Welfare Act that would require increase record keeping regarding veterinary care at commercial kennels. According to the Federal Register, the USDA is going to use the information to better monitor the veterinary care program. This has the potential to help dogs like Amber. Also, an increase in the work load can help push some kennels out of the business.

Please write to the USDA and support these revisions. The commercial kennel industry is gearing up to fight these changes, your voice is needed now.

    Please forward.

    Cincy'sMom,

Thank you for posting this. I recieved the same notification
today & was going to do a "copy/paste" of the e-mail. I wish
people could see the picture of Amber. Can you imagine the
pain & misery this poor dog endured while being used for
breeding throughout all her pain, with no medical treatment
whatsoever. I urge everyone to check out the links given
and help at least get medical treatment & record keeping
mandated for the commerical kennels.( Mass breeders for
pet shops). I am very glad the USDA proposed these changes.

Go for it...lobby for strong laws regarding the care of dogs.

In my Australian state, a new Companion Animals Act (Law) was brought in recently. When it was being drawn up, there was huge input from our major animal welfare organization...the RSPCA.

So the dogs in our state now have wonderful laws to protect them. The law says that anyone having a responsiblity for a dog...whether in kennels or in a home...has a 'duty of care' to supply all the essentials that a dog needs for its physical & mental health. This even goes as far as the necessity to give a dog some daily exercise...like a walk.

The law also gives the courts the right to ban a person from owning a dog or other animal for a set period of time...like 5 years...or for the rest of their life. The courts have already taken this option in banning animal ownership for life for a family who were prosecuted for keeping a number of dogs, cats & birds in poor circumstances & condition.

Just wanted to post a pic of Amber's sweet, sad face. The need
is there and we can help make things a little better for all the
    other Ambers out there.
