On the top of my head, I would say one
way to describe a Hero, is one who
shows courage/ is willing to put his or her life in danger in order
    to save another.

    thanks,

    let's move to question #2!

is a person PAID to do rescue work any less qualified to be a hero
as opposed to a ordinary joe that runs into the burning building and saves a kid?

No, in fact I think even more so. After all they put their lives on the line every day. They wake up knowing they could very well die at their job today.

I would agree the all of the above. Just because you're paid to do something doesn't mean you can't be a hero. Anyone who puts others ahead of themselves would qualify. Personally, my dad is my hero because he overcame such adversity to get where he did and was always there for me when I needed him. I guess what I'm saying is that you don't have to do something spectacular to be a hero.
