    Creepy Crawly Warning...

    The other day, in the garden, I met this gorgeous black snake. He (or she) held still long enough for me to snap a few pics.
    I'm glad that they are there to take care of vermin.

    Wow, that's a big one. I wonder what kind of snake that is. I wonder what those round things are in the photo, some sort of fruit? How would you know if it was a dangerous snake? I know, peppered you with too many questions.

    It's a black rat snake, non-venomous.
    One of the most common venomous snakes in North Carolina is the copperhead snake. I've never seen one, but I know what it looks like.

    The round things are black walnuts, we got tons of them.

    Thank you! Yes, they are black walnuts. We got tons this year, maybe a sign of a harsh winter to come.
