    burmese mountain dog ???

My dad want this type of dog when I move out next year. He says he wants to get a male and they allready have a male shihtzu named Oscar. Do you think the burmese will hurt Oscar? Do you think my dad should get a female? Does anyone know much about this type of breed personally? Thanks ..

They are great dogs with wonderful personalities. But it really depends on the individual personality of the dog you get and the personality of Oscar.

Is Oscar used to big dogs? Does he like to be the boss or is he more easygoing? Does he have issues such as food or toy possession?

I was all set to get a Bernese, but utlimately changed my mind
due to their average lifespan being only 6-8 years. Losing a
dog is too heart renching, to be almost guaranteed having them
    such a short timespan.

A male could probably work then. I would suggest introducing the dog to Oscar BEFORE adopting him just to be sure.

Also, if your dad is getting a puppy, there is a chance it may work out between him and Oscar at first, but as the puppy matures, he may try to start dominating Oscar. If Oscar is fine with that, there should be no problems.

Hey! Me too! 10 years ago, I was considering getting
Bernese. Until I found out how short their life span was.
I also could not bare to have my heart broken.
IF they ever fix their gene pool, and Bermese
start living an afterage of 11-13 years, that would be my next breed.

Really?? I've always LOVED Bernese Mountain Dogs! I always look up and read about them in all of the dog books (and believe me, I have tons) and I've never heard anything about them having a short lifespan. They are one of the breeds I would LOVE to get.

The dogs I've heard of are Dobermans, Great Danes, and Boxers having a fairly short lifespan.

I've met a few Bernese, and one named Sunny comes in quite often to be groomed. He is a total SWEETHEART, and absolutely gorgeous. He's rather small for a bernese, more like a large golden retriever.

The other two I met were *huge* dogs!

    Hi Wolfq!

Here's an excerpt from the FAQ on the website of the Bernese
    Mountain Dog Club of America:

Is their lifespan really only 7 years? Why?
Yes, the average lifespan of the Bernese is about 7 years. Some
live beyond ten years and some live only a short time. Why? The
most common cause of premature (prior to 7 years) death in
Bernese is cancer. Selective breeding for physical and character
traits unique to the BMD over the past hundred years may have
inadvertently contributed to the breed’s genetic predisposition to
develop health problems. To reverse this trend, it is critical that
breeders now collect health information on whole families of
dogs, share that information through our open databases, and
use that information to make wise breeding decisions to improve
    health and longevity.

    Bernese Mt Dog

    Hello,

I had a beautiful male Bernese (Berner, as they are often called) who dies at the age of 6 due to lung cancer. I elieve bone cancer is more common in the breed, but cancer in general is a big problem with them. Very hearbreaking. For that reason I would never have another one, despite the fact that he was a GREAT dog.

Tracy, a warm welcome to PEt Talk.
I am so sorry to hear about your Bernese.
From what I have heard they are truly a
    wonderful breed.
