    Meet Milo the JRT

I demanded Milo (formerly Jack) to be handed over to me. I have been trying to convince my co-worker to rehome him, ONLY because they are horrible horrible HORRIBLE owners. They had 2 and I convinced them to rehome that one a year ago. So its been a long year trying to get this dog away from her.

Sadly it took Milo attacking a 10yr old for it to happen. Its 100% the adults fault as they allowed that child to tease, taunt, and hurt Milo over the years, & he finally snapped.

Milo is under quarantine at my place (the Health Department was over yesterday am) per the law. He isn't allowed to leave my property until they return on the 24th to see him again.

The first few hours with him was pure hell. He wouldn't let me open the kennel, and he barked & growled non-stop. When he finally let me open the door, I popped a muzzle on him & its been peaceful since.

Hes calm, quiet (except when its potty time), and is learning that hes not the boss, and his aggression is unacceptable. He gets along well with Digi & Charlie, but poor Cam(cat) hates him (she'll warm up in about 2 weeks).

I bought him a 2nd muzzle that is larger and much more comfortable (soft) for when we are at home. He has to keep the firm one on while we are at work, as its impossible for him to get that one off. I just cannot risk the health of the other 3 over his comfort while at work. At least if I'm home, I can intervene if he gets the softer one off & tries anything.

Hes been getting better everyday, and is improving so much. He has never been quiet in his whole life & has never been relaxed. Even though he is muzzled, he seems content. He lays by my feet, jumps up asking for a pat (which is a huge deal as petting him use to result in being nipped or snarled at), is eating (I switched him to raw), and wants to play. He has had 0 accidents in the house, so we took his diaper off last night.

Left to right: Digi (6yr old F English Shepherd), Charlie (3yr old M Poodle/JRT), and Milo (3-4yr old M pure JRT) wearing the soft muzzle.

Hello! Nice to see Digi and Charlie! And good for you for taking on this challenge and ultimately saving Milo from uncertainty. He is a cutey.

I look forward to hearing updates on Milo's progress!
Our goal in life should be - to be as good a person as our dog thinks we are.

Thank you for the siggy, Michelle!

Hello, Digi and Charlie! And how do you do, Milo the JRT! I'm so sorry that your life has been very difficult. I'm glad you can use a softer muzzle when your new people are with you. Paws and fingers crossed that everything will go well this next week, you will get used to your new home, and this will be the beginning of a much better life for you. I've read that JRTs are smart and have lots of energy, so I am sure your new people will help you learn all kinds of new skills like playing, asking for petting and more.
Praying for peace in the Middle East, Ukraine, and around the world.

Aaahh, I have been defrosted! Thank you, Bonny and Asiel!

    Thanks guys

Another employee just told me they are positive Milo is between 5-7yrs old. Thats a long time to live in those conditions, & sad that other co-workers know his age better then his owner does

Poor, poor Milo! What a rough life you've had! Prayers that everything continues to go well for you!

    Hi Karen,

I've been so busy as I'm the VP of the turtle rescue, which is now a Canadian Charity. So I hardly have any time for anything.

Its awesome how fast we are growing. It'll be better once we get a facility, as I'll be the caretaker and will manage the online stuff. So I'll have more of a life then

Bless you for taking in Milo. That is a huge task before you. I'm sure Milo will come around.

Can the health dept do anything to prevent your coworker from owning any other dogs or even all pets? Perhaps a pet rock is more their speed?

Ever since I got bit by a Jack Russel pretty viciously last year, I don't really trust them, but I am so glad Milo is in good hands. He actually really looks like the one that place Milo LOL. He sounds like quite the challenge but I am so glad he had you rather than the only option of being put down. Shelters would have never worked with him. I think MOST dogs do deserve a second chance...especially one that lived in nothing but a hell hole. Is he now considered a "dangerous dog"?

I really hope he improves, and I think he will. Look forward to hearing more about little Milo.

I feel as thought JRT are a breed that can either be REALLY good or REALLY bad for a family. Seems like they need the right type of owner to not be out of control and dominant.

The Health Department said Milo is in 0 trouble. I think everyone admitted what the child had been doing to the dog, but most likely sugar coated it a bit. So he is not labeled as one.

However I personally will handle him as such. He must be muzzled at all times when out in public (after his quarantine of course), but I'll only allow that with his soft muzzle & once I feel he really isn't a threat to anyone 75% of the time. The muzzle will be for people or children I do not spot in time that run up to him, or if I drop the leash, etc.

I personally cannot ever trust a dog like him in public. I have seen what he can do, and I know he was mistreated for so darn long. Its honestly not fair to the public nor himself.

I do plan to take him to the dog park to help socialize him in the warmer months, WITH the permission of everyone already in the park. I did the same when I first got Charlie (minus the muzzle), as I didn't know him well enough. Everyone was fine & he was a pretty good dog, just too excited & hyper.

We are glad the Health Department understands the truth of the situation, you and he are lucky in that regard. And I do think caution is the wise way to go, considering how long he was subjected to that awful treatment!

I understand completely of why you wouldn't trust him without it! That's what muzzles are made for. And of course, there's always the one kid with the one parent that doesn't watch the kid, and then you end up with a dog bite on YOUR plate and a lawsuit because the idiot parents can't control their kids.

That poor dog. No telling what he's been through in his life. I'm so glad you have him now. My Rose has trouble relaxing fully at times, too. Things like opening cabinet doors or refridgerator door makes her back up. Sounds like Milo is going to do great with you. Wonderful that he's made such progress already.

I did the right thing by setting you free
But the pain is very deep.
If only I could turn back time, forever, you I'd keep.
    I miss you

I hear you whimper in your sleep
I gently pet you and say, no bad dreams
It will be alright, to my dog as dark as night.

Fur as dark as the night.
    Join me on this flight.
Paws of love that follow me.
In my heart you'll forever be.

How I wish I could hold you near.
Turn back time to make it so.
Hug you close and never let go.

With progress, there is always a step back.

Milo just tried to bite me. I refused to back off as he is no longer the boss of anything. I just kept trying to repeat the same action until he pretty much gave up.

Who knew it could take 10 mins to get 1 bootie back on

He is wearing booties on his front paws as he clawed his face all up today while trying to get his muzzle off. Then when I put him in the XL kennel for muzzle free time, he licked his paws raw! His little toes were so swollen

His ear seemed to be too red & his face was a little puffy. I gave him some benadrl to see if it would help. His ear, face, and paws are looking much nicer. His paws are so soft from all the licking.

I need to get him some winter boots, as it must be the snow thats causing it. There is no salt of any kind on my walkway or front yard (where the pups potty). I'm soooo not prepared for another dog, blarg!

Milo is in good hands with you. Trust, time, & patience will pay off. Congratulations on your new home Milo.
The frost is on the pumpkin & I've been BOO'D by two pet talk ghosts.
    Thank you Fritz & Cassiesmom
