    Hey, Southerners!

Just curious - what is the big deal about Red Velvet cake? Is it so much more tasty or superlative in some way to any other cake? It is so "trendy" right now, but the ply red velvet anything I have actually gotten to taste was just vaguely chocolate regular cake. Am I missing some mysterious allure? Now some coffee places are doing Red Velvet Coffee? Isn't that just mocha with food coloring?

NO clue. I always thought it was a trend, a tradition, or something silly, and now I can't have any. If I find a gluten free version, I might make some, just to answer your question.

I think this is right up there with red-eye gravy. It's a standard. It's gravy with coffee in it. Gross.

I googled "what's the deal with red velvet cake"

    And got these results:

I think that depends on how good a cook you are.

I can't really describe the taste, other than it is yummy. Similar flavor to chocolate, but not exactly. It is the cream cheese frosting that really makes it though.

Karen, I have lived in the south all of my life, but I am no fan of Red Velvet Cake. Just the thought of that much food coloring in anything makes my stomach turn. My husband, on the other hand, loves it.
If it tasted like chocolate to you, you're right on. The cake has cocoa in it. So I'm sure that's what it is supposed to taste like. Don't waste your time on the red food coloring. Eat chocolate cake!! Ha Ha!

My signature is so out of date. Only Mack and Roger remain from that crew. We lost our Ben about 2 months ago.

Thanks for explaining it, Logan! I'll stick to plain chocolate cake, and if I need it I can always *make* cream cheese frosting!

Awww, so sorry to hear. Rest in peace old boy!
