    Ryder - Neuter on Monday & X-rays. (TODAY'S UPDATE)

Ryder is going to be neutered on Monday along with having X-rays done on his hips & back legs/knees. He has been walking quite funny for a while so we need to figure out what is going on with that. He is only 8, almost 9 months old. Just thought I'd update. So good thoughts would be appreciated.

Aww, as my brother would say, "Ryder may not know he's broken, but he's gonna get fixed!"

It will be good to get an x-ray of those hips, just to be sure what is or is not going on! Hopefully it is just normal growing puppy clumsiness, but it is best to know for sure in case it is not!

Ryder is home! Vet said his procedure lasted 7 minutes. He did very good with everything. Everything is great. They couldn't be more than happier with him - he was the "perfect patient." Also, we found out that the vet discovered that through the X-rays, Ryder has a sprain - no idea how he got that but he must have had a high tolerance for pain - so, the best news is that his hips are fine, nothing that the vet found unusual! Everything is symmetrical - bones look just fine. Thank goodness! We're glad we did the x-rays so now we know what is the problem. We have to keep him calm and none of running/playing for 2 weeks up to a month... no running around, no jumping, no roughhousing, no zooming around in the house/yard... Yikes! Any advice? I know we will be crating him a lot for the next 2 weeks or so to allow him to heal and relax. We have no idea how he got a sprain but the vet said it happens often in big breeds? Oh, and I asked him if he thought if Ryder was done growing, and pretty much he is... at 60lbs. He's pretty small for a Lab, now I'm convinced he was the runt out of the litter! I'm OKAY with that because he's just the right size for us!

Awww, good luck keeping him from much vigorous activity. Think up some games that don't require running to keep him mentally busy at least. Maybe scent-based games in the house - give him a dirty sock, or something with a drop of vanilla on it, then hide it and ask him to find it, and he gets a small treat as a reward. Intense sniffing slows a dog down (ask anyone who has ever attempted to walk a beagle) so that might be fun! So glad you found the reason for his awkward gait, and his bones are all fine.

I can't believe how big he's gotten. I'm glad to hear it's nothing to serious. I imagine it's going to be hard to keep a young lab calm for that long though!

At 9 months he still has a fair bit of growing and filling out to do, most won't fully mature til 18 months or so .

I'm glad his hips and everything xrayed fine.

Yeah the vet said he will probably grow some more since his bones aren't completely fused/set yet. He will fill out eventually. That's what I heard.. until 18 months old. We will see! For now he's my little baby.
