We have had to let our Samantha, the cat in my avatar, go. Samantha had had health issues since her furmum died in March, and they were getting the better of her.
Samantha had a real health crisis in April when she was diagnosed with irritable bowel disease. The treatment has kept her comfortable, but the treatment (steroids) is hard on the kidneys.
Samantha got regular checkups at the vet and when she was checked in November, she had dropped a worrying amount of weight. She had been on a hypoallergenic diet for her condition, but she always seemed to have liked that. We had to feed her anything and everything she would eat and check her again in two weeks. At that time she had dropped more weight and her kidney levels were found to be sky-high.
She was put on fluids to make her more comfortable and her levels came down, but not to a level where she could reasonably have been given fluids at home. One dose of steroid, which she needed to control her bowel condition, would have sent her kidney levels way back up again.
The fluids had given her a few days, so I brought her back home and we spoiled her - anything she wanted to eat and no pills - before taking her back to the vet.
I can hardly believe that Samantha only outlived her mother by 6 months. Until this time last year she was so robust that you just couldn't believe she was 16.
All my girls in happier times -
