    UPDATE-Need help with Myndi's diet

Last January, Myndi was diagnosed with kidney disease - not kidney failure. Her vet put her on Hill's K/D (canned - she won't eat dry), and she took to it right away and I had no problem getting her to eat it. I added veggies to it for one of her 2 daily meals and she always polished it off. Well - I guess she finally got sick of it, because now she refuses to eat but a couple of bites, no matter what I add to it. I've tried just a spoonful of a more yummy dog food on top - she eats that and leaves the K/B. Tried a little beef gravy on it - no dice. The only thing I can get her to eat, other than a dog food that she shouldn't, is chicken. When her vet first put her on it, she told me she would research different foods if she wouldn't eat the K/D, but that was never a problem. I'm going to call her Monday, and take her up on the offer, tho.

I read that protein should be a max of 23% in a low protein diet, yet every dog food label that claims to be lower in protein, lists a minimum percentage, so who knows how high it actually is?

In the meantime, does anyone know of a low protein dog food - must be canned - that I can tempt her with? Or does anyone have a home recipe that would be low protein? I'm at my wit's end, trying to figure out what I can feed her, that won't worsen her condition.

Fish formulas are often low protein, though I don't think I've seen any THAT low.

This will help you, Ellie! Top lists prescription options, keep scrolling down for commercial options:

I ONLY SCANNED through this -- you will want to read it in more detail.

Thanks Sandie. I had checked out that site, but couldn't find much that listed the max percentages of protein. I did some further hunting around, and found California Natural brand - they have lamb and brown rice and chicken and brown rice, and both are lower than 11% in protein, and low in phosphorous too. Supposedly, 2 local pet supply houses carry it, but that remains to be seen, since one said they carried the Veg to Bowl when I was feeding that, but they didn't. I'll check them out tomorrow and if they have it, pick up a couple of cans to give it a try. In the meantime, I'm back to feeding her a half and half mixture. Guess at least that way she's getting part K/D into her, which is better than nothing.

    Commercial KD Dog Food Brands
Note, the following commercial dog food companies do not manufacture a specific KD dog food, as such.

To help broaden your renal dog food choices, we have researched the various dog food recipes, and included products which contain a maximum of 23% protein.

Max of 23% which is what you asked for.

Well I spent a good part of my weekend searching, searching, and researching low protein/low phosphorus dog foods for Miss Finicky. I came up with several that looked promising, so I printed out the nutrient analysis on each, and papers in hand, paid a visit to the vet. She checked them out, and they wouldn't be suitable for The Myn! The percentages were way higher than what is in the K/D, and she said it wouldn't be advisable to feed any of them. However, she did give me printouts of 9 different homemade recipes to try. and they are all really simple. So - I figure I'll give some of them a try - even mix it half and half with the K/D, and gradually increase the percentage of K/D to where I have her back on that 100%. Even if I can't get her back on K/D only, it still wouldn't be a problem cooking for her. One of the perks of retirement - I have all the time in the world to do anything that I want!!! So wish me luck with this experiment please.

LOL. Surprisingly, several of them have tapioca in them. Others with rice or potatoes or egg whites, also chicken or beef, and all kinds of different combinations of all of those ingredients. Every one has 1 or 2 tablespoons of chicken fat, calcium carbonate tablets, and a multivitamin.

I was trying to find recipes for Myndi over the weekend but came up with nothing much when the analysis was done. Glad your vet found some that you can make. Good luck with the homemade for Miss Finicky . It gets so hard trying to tempt them with something to keep them going, I hope she'll be grateful and decide she likes what you make
