Tornado dog crawls home on 2 broken legs

    Original article with photo

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (KABC) -- Almost three weeks after deadly tornadoes tore through Alabama, an incredible story of survival has emerged about a dog that crawled home to its family on two broken legs.

Mason, a terrier mix, was picked up and swept away by a tornado. His family searched but could not find him.

Then Monday, two and a half weeks later, they came back home to sift through the debris and found Mason waiting for them on the porch.

"They've not been able to be in alignment so neither one of them have healed, so he had to crawl on two broken legs to get home," said veterinary Dr. Barbara Benhart.

"This is probably the most dramatic we've seen as far as an injury in an animal that's survived this long," said Phil Doster, an animal-shelter worker.

A veterinarian has volunteered to take Mason in and nurse him back to health.

The report I read (I think) said that the owners will not be able to
keep him anymore & will put him up for adoption. I don't think I could
ever do that to this dog that tried so hard to get home.

That is truly amazing! The dog made such an effort to get back to his home, and his family won't keep him? They should never be allowed to have another dog!

I hope Mason will get well and stay for the rest of his life with a loving family!

I found the other story. http://www.allheadlinenews.com/artic...0broken%20legs

The owner has a good reason I guess, but I still would have to keep him.
He is such a little dog & I couldn't bear to let him go. That's just me.

Well, I guess we folks at Pet Talk consider our cat/dogs etc. children, and who would abandon their child, but I can see that it's also hard for the people who is left there with nothing, especially if they are old.

I can understand why the owner has to do this if he lost everything in the tornado, however, it's not something that I could ever do. I would have to keep my furkids, even if it meant that we had to live in a tent! They have always been here for me, thru good and bad/thick and thin, and I will always be here for them - NO MATTER WHAT!!!

I'm kind of hoping that, with this story picking up so many readers, somebody will cut the humans enough slack that they can keep him after all.

    So mote it be.

Amazing story and sad as well. I feel like you all do. I'd never give up on my dog (or any pet).

When I worked in the city, a man who became homeless stayed with his dogs. He'd only ask for handouts for his dogs, who were social, friendly, and looked in good shape, considering the situation.

I recently read an article which I can't find now about homeless people keeping their dogs with them even after losing everything else. There are now veterinary clinics springing up specifically for homeless people's dogs, so people can still spay/neuter, vaccinate, and have injuries looked after. The article mentioned that some homeless women are adopting large dogs - not as begging props, but as protectors.

I have a hard time with people adopting cats and dogs just as window-dressing ("I'M HUNGRY AND SO IS MY DOG") but I figure no decent shelter would hold with that anyway, and they're mostly hooking up with strays.

That's the kind of news that makes me feel fantastic, I was devastated reading that the owners were giving up the poor dog. I would live anywhere and do without but no way could I ever abandon my fur friends...they mean as much to me as life itself. I was hoping someoone would come forward and help once the story broke. Makes my day, such a cute little fellow too.
