    Saying Goodbye To Old Herbie

This is a story of saying goodbye from one old friend to another.
    It's a good read.

It is, I heard about this on the radio the other day. I wonder if they'll save something of "Herbie's" seeds or something, to be able to grow another if a cure for Dutch Elm is ever perfected.

I was crying by the end of that story.
"We give dogs the time we can spare, the space we can spare and the love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made" - M. Facklam

"We are raised to honor all the wrong explorers and discoverers - thieves planting flags, murderers carrying crosses. Let us at last praise the colonizers of dreams."- P.S. Beagle

"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king." - J.R.R. Tolkien

I truely believe trees have spirits of a sort. RIP Herbie, you will be missed. I would have loved to meet such a fine tree.

I cried. I love that tree, too. He lived a good, long life. I'm glad his remains will be used to create lasting memories. How sad. Goodbyes are never easy and I imagine there will not be a dry eye when that old tree is cut down. Thanks for posting this story, Liz. It was sad, but really nice to know how loved he was, and to what lengths his friends went to keep him standing all those years.
