    Puzzle 210

The human fascination with tigers, large and small, would seem sometimes, to be reciprocal. Are we as interesting to them as they are to us? Do big cats have a philosophical, as well as culinary, interest in human beings? Domestic cats seem to find our investigations, our pastimes, our work and our rest, more interesting than we do. They, too, follow us, watching circumspectly, from afar. They measure our responses to things unknown to them and they grant us our private moments that other animals ~ dogs, for instance ~ do not grant as readily.

If only we were not so apt to confound one another. If only we knew one another better. If only we had the time and the wisdom to explore each of our fearful symmetries with unjudging love. And if only we might walk in and out of our respective domiciles, as the Burmese tiger did, curiously, silently, and without so much as a hint of harm.

Unfortunately our access to large cats has always been too abrupt and too dangerous for our own good. Sadly, we’ve inspired their mistrust, their malicious playfulness, and we’ve mercilessly teased them under the big tent, the circus. We've caged them so we might consider them safely, but in so doing, we've deprived them of their magnanimity. These things are certainly our undoing.

Found only in northern oceans, the 22 species of auks are stocky seabirds that stand upright like penguins. All members of the family are expert divers that use their short wings both for flying and as flippers for swimming in pursuit of fish, shrimp, and other prey.

The Cymric is the long-haired form of the Manx and, as such, it is
distinguished by a similar absence of tail. There are three different forms: Rumpy Cymrics have no trace of a tail, but just a hollow at the base; stumpies have some vertebrae present in this area; the Longie has a tail that is only slightly shorter than that of other breeds.

Hairless rats need to eat more often to keep warm. A normal rat needs a well balanced diet of grains, seeds, and a protein source. Hairless rats eat more of it. Also, although not proven, a higher source of protein seems to benefit their health. Generally, a high protein, non-allergenic dog kibble or cat kibble can be added into the diet will meet these needs. I feed my hairless rats cat chow, seeds, pasta and oats twice a day. Furred rats require a dog kibble with a lower protein ratio.

The Appaloosa's heritage is as colorful and unique as its coat pattern. Usually noticed and recognized because of its spots and splashes of color, the abilities and beauty of this breed are more than skin deep.

    What could be more peaceful
Than a cat curled up in a spot of winter
    Sunshine on a windowsill
    Or an old dog sleeping
In the sunny spot on the floor,
    Legs twitching in dreams of
    Remembered puppyhood?
We tend to think peace is hard to find
But just look to the animals
    Instead of politicians,
    And there it is.

A man walking across a field encountered a tiger.
He fled, the tiger chasing after him.
Coming to a cliff, he caught hold of a wild vine
and swung himself over the edge.
The tiger sniffed at him from above.
Terrified, the man looked down to where, far below,
another tiger had come, waiting to eat him.
Two mice, one white, one black, little by little
began to gnaw away at the vine.
The man saw a luscious strawberry near him.
Grasping the vine with one hand, he plucked
    the strawberry with the other.
”How sweet it tasted!” A ZEN Parable

Ethoxyquin, a chemical preservative, was originally developed as a rubber stabilizer. It was later refined for use as a preservative in animal feeds. Before the late 1980's there was little Ethoxyquin used in pet foods. After companies started to make high performance feeds they began to use more of this chemical
to extend the shelf life of their products. Shortly after this, some pet owners began to see dramatic changes in their animals. Puppies were dying, deformed or stillborn. One breeders prized studs throat looked like raw hamburger and every time he walked he would leave a trail of blood.

The most distinctive feature of the alert, finely built Basenji becomes apparent only when it is disturbed - instead of barking like other dogs,
it has unique yodeling and chortling calls.

The Basenji was developed as a hunting dog in the Congo and it may be related to similar dogs portrayed on ancient Egyptian artifacts.

Green vegetables are favored by these dogs and should form part of their regular diet.

As for the horse named Marengo, legend has it that he was
captured during the Egyptian campaign, that Napoleon rode him
on all his famous campaigns from the second Italian campaign,
through the retreat from Moscow, to the final battle at Waterloo.
The horse reputedly was captured after that climatic battle and
taken to Britain, where he was put on exhibition and even today
his skeleton is on display in the National Army Museum.

Marengo was a sensation. Crowds pressed into the Waterloo
Rooms on Pall Mall to see the proud horse described on the
advertising handbills as "Bonaparte's White Barb Charger ...
favourite horse of the late Emperor". This small grey Arab
stallion, around 14 hands in height (he was called a Barb
because he was of Turkish origin), had accompanied his
master "through most of his battles," stated the bills and carried
the wounds to prove it: five scars and a bullet lodged in his tail.

Constant, Napoleon's valet, wrote that, "The Emperor mounted
a horse without grace ... and I believe that he would not have
always been very sturdy on the horse if we had not taken so
much care to give him only horses perfectly trained." On the
other hand, Ernst Otto Odeleben, more critical of Napoleon's
lack of equestrian skills said: "Napoleon rode like a butcher ...
whilst galloping, his body rolled backwards and forwards and
sideways, according to the speed of his horse.”
