    Poem About Adopting Senior Pets

I found this on the Beagle rescue site. Doesn't have an author.

    One By One

For all senior pets who await a new home and deserve a second chance at life and happiness

One by one, they pass by my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his time, he can't run and play.
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old girl, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail.
Who wants a ferret so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head,
Can't justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger ones get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face, and I finally had hope.
You saw through the grey, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond this cage.
You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,
You love me so dearly, you want me to know.
I may have lived most of my life with another,
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give,
To you, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week, or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear.

    9/3/13
I did the right thing by setting you free
But the pain is very deep.
If only I could turn back time, forever, you I'd keep.
    I miss you

I hear you whimper in your sleep
I gently pet you and say, no bad dreams
It will be alright, to my dog as dark as night.

Fur as dark as the night.
    Join me on this flight.
Paws of love that follow me.
In my heart you'll forever be.
    [/SIZE]

How I wish I could hold you near.
Turn back time to make it so.
Hug you close and never let go.

That is a very sweet poem Val. I decided some time ago that my next dog will come from a shelter and be a senior.

Love the poem, Val. I was going to say exactly what Pam said. I have also decided that my next dog is going to be a senior rescue. But what I also like (for lack of a better word) about this poem is that it points out that it isn't just older dogs and cats that are getting turned in. It makes me think that even if I am not sure about a second dog, maybe I can look into an older small animal. Thanks Val.

That is especially nice for me. I'm running a senior home for dogs j/k. A couple of years ago we adopted Boscoe who is older and people thought he was scary looking so he got passed by a lot. Just a month ago, we adopted Chloe who is young at heart, but looks old with bulging eyes and a white muzzle. She was at a kill shelter until a great fostering group rescued her. Now she is with us and is a great dog. Both dogs are boxers and get along wonderfully. And both of them seem wise to their experiences and know that they are now loved and have a home for the rest of their lives.

Wow Val... this makes 2 posts of yours today that have made my eyes leak!

This is such a wonderful poem!

I think it should be framed and put in the lobby of every shelter in the WORLD!!!
