Missing 9-year-old Missouri girl found dead in cave, police say

If the stepfather is not guilty, or was not drunk, he is the STUPIDEST creature on the face of the earth! He makes an armadillo look like Einstein. (My apologies to the armadillo!)

Missing 9-year-old Missouri girl found dead in cave, police say

    Fri Nov 9, 6:12 PM

By Marcus Kabel, The Associated Press

NEOSHO, Mo. - A nine-year-old girl who had been missing for a week was found dead Friday in a cave, authorities said.

The body of Rowan Ford was found on private land about 16 kilometres south of the girl's hometown of Stella, a village of about 200 people, Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said. He said authorities were still determining how the girl died.

"We know we have a homicide," Copeland said, declining to elaborate.

He declined to say if there were any suspects but said no arrests have been made.

The McDonald County deputy who found the body had searched the area on his way to work after recalling that there was a cavern there, Copeland said. The FBI was gathering the evidence at the scene.

Stella Mayor Bill Alsop, who answered the phone at the family's home Friday, said the girl's mother was "pretty shook up" when Copeland came to the home that morning and told her the body was very likely Rowan's.

"He told her they found the body of the little girl, and they were 99 per cent sure it was her daughter," Alsop said.

Rowan was reported missing after her mother, Colleen Spears, returned home early Nov. 3 from a night shift at a Wal-Mart.

The girl's stepfather, David Spears, told investigators he and two male friends were with Rowan the night before until they went out around 10:45 p.m. He returned home around midnight but did not check on the girl, Copeland said.

David Spears also later told authorities that he called his mother sometime after 1 a.m. and asked to use her vehicle, Copeland has said. She took it to him about half an hour later, then stayed at his house while her son left in her vehicle for about 5 hours, Copeland has said.

Copeland also has said that Spears has not been able to explain what he did during that time. He has not been accused of a crime.

David Spears declined to comment. He has been staying at his mother's house outside Stella since Rowan's disappearance.

"He's pretty torn up. He's extremely distraught. He's been crying quite a bit," his mother, Myrna Spears, said.

His mother declined to answer any questions about what happened that night. David Spears previously has said that it was wrong for him to leave the girl alone.

They have arrested the step father & another male friend. This guy's
explanation of his activities on the night the little girl disappeared seems
    to strange to be believable.

I've been following this story too. It just didn't add up. If he left his mother at his house when he took her car, she should have known what happened to the girl. What is wrong with people? Always killing children!!!

I feel so sorry for the girl's mother!!!!

I do too. I hope she has friends who can help comfort her.I read that
the mother worked two jobs to support herself & daughter. It is a hard,
hard world for working women nowadays.

I personaly think that all who prey on childen should be convicted to life
in prison with NO parole or death,

Cases like this make it seem like reinstating things like sentencing the guy to spend the rest of his life at hard labor - breaking big rocks into little rocks with a sledge-hammer for the next 60 years - seem reasonable.

His story makes no sense whatsoever.

Our prayers are with the girl's mother, that the truth be found and justice be done.

Seems like there are a lot of stories such as this were the boyfriend harms the child. We woman have to take note of the men we date. Can we truly trust them to be left alone with our precious child, how long how well do we know them. These stories are so sad and this child, a horrible senseless death. May he get what is coming to him.

Latest news article. Crimes like this one makes the most severe
punishment for conviction of it, a no-brainer. They must NEVER be allowed
to live & continue to be a threat to all children.

If I ran the world, any one who molested a child would have a certain body part cut off an inch at a time with a dull butter knife and no anestesia!

    RIP Rowan.

I hope they paid with their lives for what they've done.
