    My Oktoberfest trip to Munich

I am finally ready to post some photos of my trip earlier this month to see Barbara and visit Oktoberfest. We had a lovely time and the weather was gorgeous. We decided to go to Oktoberfest on the Monday because it is less busy than the weekend, so on the Sunday we went for a sail on one of the Bavarian Lakes, the Chiemsee. Mad King Ludwig II had a small holiday home on one of the islands and we took a tour round it.

    Posing by the stautes

    Ludwig’s bedroom

Within the castle, we also saw a very early version of a dumb waiter – a large wooden table which was winched up from the kitchen to Ludwig’s rooms. Apparently that operation took 20 minutes. Since this castle was never actually finished, kitchen equipment was never installed, so for the short time that Ludwig lived there, the staff transported his food from another building, then winched the table into position! Presumably Ludwig wasn’t too fussed about hot food.

Pretty view to the other island

    Some Alps

    More coming …

Monday was a lovely day, and Barbara insisted that I dress like a local for the event. I was mildly concerned that somebody would think that I was a local, and ask me difficult questions in German, but the day passed without incident.

    Waiting for our lunch

    Waitresses queuing for their orders

It’s certainly not a job for weaklings!

Hundreds of people in every direction

A few of the breweries had teams of horses, all dressed up in their colours. I just love their little crochteted ear coverers.

    The Scottish mutton tent!

    A couple more …

    Magnificent Tigris

Both boys were wonderful hosts and we had an absolutely great time!

Great pictures. Who is the girl friend Barbara has her arm around ?
Wow, if this visit was an off day, they must be packed on a weekend.
    Looks like great fun.

WONDERFUL pics, Karen!! Wow, do you have any idea how much people were in that beer-tent ? And, do you HAVE TO drink beer there? Or can you also order fruitjuice or simply water??

Thank you so much for sharing your pics. I love to see travelpics

In this tent there will be about 3500 people when it's full. But Monday at lunch time there will only be about 1500...
There are 8 tents like that and when you go Saturday at the same time they will all be closed because they are stuffed full.
You can have water or apple juice- but it all comes in the 1 liter mug. And most people don't go there for a liter of sparkling water
You are welcome however to share a mug- that's what Siegmar and I did- I could never finish a liter. Half of it is about 1 pint.

Laura may well be too nice and slim to look her best in a drindl, but if I have to dress up, so does everyone else!

Lut, I couldn't drink that much liquid either, not beer, not water, nor anything else. Sharing is definitely the way to go. One between four would be ideal, but I doubt they'd let you take up four seats and buy one drink!

The Ferris wheel was great! Siegmar took some nice photos from it.
