    Kayleigh could use some prayers..Stitches are out!

    My big, beautiful, mal-mix, Kayleigh is currently at the vet and could use some good thoughts, prayers, whatever! Kayleigh is our shop dog. She hates all my other dogs and thinks my cats are snacks. This limits her in the house time, but she's very social with people. So we built her a pen attached to the shop, where Stuart spends most of his time. Kayleigh often sleeps in the shop. When we moved her over there, we very carefully went through the shop and removed hazards. Anti-freeze, oil, ect are all stored in a different building that no dog is allowed in. Pointy tools and other potential chewies are out of reach. Stuart is obsessive about his tools! I sincerely believed that there was nothing in the shop that could harm Kayleigh. She's not a chewer. Other than a couple porcupines, she's never chewed anything she shouldn't!

    Last night she found a container of toothpicks. I don't know where they came from or what they were doing in the shop, but she found them and chewed up the container. Much like with the porcupines, Kayleigh did not stop chewing when she got poked! When I went to let her out this morning, her face, paws and chest were bloody. She had vomitted a large amount of blood and toothpick shards in several spots in the shop. She was lethargic and her breathing seemed off to me.

    I dropped her off at the vet with instructions to do whatever they had to in order to figure out if she has internal damage. I know some of the blood is coming from her mouth, but there's way too much of it! I haven't heard from the vet yet this morning and the longer I wait, the more worried I am getting. I am friends with one of the vets outside of her professional life. As I was leaving this morning, she pulled me aside and said "this could be bad and the bill could be huge." And I really don't care, I just want Kayleigh home and ok.

    I think my dog yard is cursed lately!

    Oh dear, who knew toothpicks could cause such a problem. Prayers said, good thoughts in mind, all toes and fingers crossed for a good outcome for Miss Kayleigh.

    Oh Miss Sami, my dearest, sweetest RB doggie...you have some work to do, pronto Miss. Kayleigh needs your strength. Be a good girl and go check on her and keep by her until she's in the clear. Thanks baby dog.

    Update...

    Quick update...

    The vet called at noon. Kayleigh has a large laceration under her tongue. At least some of the blood is coming from there. She will have to be knocked out to get some stitches. The vet is "on the fence" about an exploratory surgery. She has no obviously painful spots in her abdomen, but she's stoic by nature. Her pain tolerance is quite high. Her stool is tarry, which indicates blood in her digestive tract, but it's hard to tell from the outside if the blood is coming from an internal problem or if it's blood she's swallowed from the cut in her mouth. So while she's knocked out, they are going to do some x-rays of her abdomen, maybe an ultrasound and bloodwork. If any of those things show abnormalities, they will have to do the surgery to see what's going on internally.

    Kayleigh, be a good dog and let the white coats do their thing to help, now that you did YOUR thing with the toothpicks. Mom is quite worried about you, so you need to cooperate a bit here, girlie!

    Yukon Time = same as California

    "Noon" Yukon time was noon in California or 3:00 PM Eastern time...

    Big cut under the tongue would have contributed a lot of the blood;
    Overall the Vet report sounds hopeful and gives a good plan of action.

    Now WE need to do some serious *Praying* and send a Lotta Good Vibes up
    towards the Yukon!!

    It's 5:30 PM Eastern time NOW;
    that's only 2:30 PM Yukon time ... prolly not a lot of fresh news available yet.

    But that give us time to cross some Pawz & Klawz ... and Send a Prayer!

    ** Get Well, Kayleigh!! **
