    Pain update...now its my neck...

I went to a physical therapist and his opinion and the orthopedic doctors opinion is that I have a pinched nerve in my neck.

Has anyone else ever had this happen? I am in so much pain. I do traction every night, the first night made it worse but I feel a bit better today.

Oh please, don't do that on your own . It can be so dangerous....!
I've had a pinched nerve there some years ago, and all I was allowed to do was rest and visit a physiotherapist! Cannot you see another doctor??

Okay, but please be as careful as possible! If the pain gets worse, stop all exercising...! Do you have a special neck-saving pillow?

    Caseymom,

Been there, done that. I was diagnosed with a pinched nerve in my neck a few years ago and that's exactly what they gave me to do. That didn't work either. I'm sort of resigned to living with the numbness, and tingling in my left hand. I'm 54 and physically feel alot older. I'm due for a consultation with an orthopod for my right knee. I'm also going to let him know about my pinched nerve.

Good luck. I do feel your pain and wish it on NO ONE!!!!

    *Pinched Nerve* Pro here.....

*Sigh* It's agony and no fun as you've experienced. I suffered since around 1985, on and off. Of course, you may need an MRI to determine the exact reason for it. It can range from disc problems to stenosis. Every case is different. It got to the point that morphine was useless. Cervical pillows were a joke. Traction and PT worked for a few years off and on. I finally found a "spine" specialist (cervical and lumbar) who, when viewing my last MRI (Nov 2004) almost fell of his chair. My problem all those years was that my cervical discs were fine but misaligned (no known cause..born that way and worsened with age). I came close to paralysis (ie Chris Reeve) if I dared to sneeze wrong, get whiplash, fall etc. He made me make an arrangement for surgery that day and almost put me on bed rest (yeah, right). (had to find care for my mom) Jan 3, 2005 changed my life.

Of course it was scary but I had total trust in my doc. The pain was 24/7, I missed a lot of work, I never laughed, was always miserable, cried all the time. I tried pillows on my side, so there was no gap between my head and shoulder. I'm not discouraging you, I'm so sorry. But people cringe when they hear "neck surgery". I guess I was one of the lucky ones, Thank God. I had zero pain from the second I woke up in recovery. And since then, rarely. If I do something I probably shouldn't, I may get a reminder "twinge'. The only thing I can't do is fully bend my head back (ie: to look up). But my life changed and the doc is a God to me.

Same problem with my spine-he operated June 7, 2005 and except for some muscle pain (I try to work out 4-5 a week with his approval, knowing I "know" what to do to keep safe) I have a new life. I do have to admit, though, due to the congenital problem with my entire spinal column, Ihave an appointment next week for a check up since my back bones are disintergrating and he wants to keep an eye on them)

Sorry to go on. I want to tell you there is hope. Don't be afraid. See a orthopedic specialist. I feel your every pain. My heart is aching and so sad for you. It changes your life. It's no way to live. Get the MRI immediately. In this day and age, there is NO reason to suffer so badly. Medical science has changed so drastically. I send you a gentle hug. Please email or PM me. People who see me say I look like I grew 2 inches..I stand up straight and my head is on straight-not bent to one side.

{HUGS HUGS HUGS} If you PM me, I'llk send you my email. Maybe my doc knows a specialist in your area.

K9karen, I am so sorry you have lived with so much pain, I can't imagine, these 5 weeks have been horrible.

I am being scheduled for an MRI and a kidney test to make sure all these drugs are not harming my kidneys. I know what you mean about sneezing, on top of all this I got a cold and sneezing hurts so bad.

I am glad I have you to ask questions to if I need it, thanks...

Hello, So sorry to hear about your pain. I fell in my driveway about 4 years ago and since then I have had problems as well. I have a pinched nerve, artristis and bone spurrs. I have been to different doctors who either want to inject me with something or tell me I will might be bedridden someday or wearing a neck brace. I finallly went to an ortho surgeon who has me doing PT which does help. I have pain everyday, get cramps in my toes, legs, hands, fingers, arm and somedays feel 100 years old. I totally understand your feelings. I tried the traction at PT and it made it worst for me. For me sitting around makes it worse, some movement even a slow walk improves the situation. I took a year of off work due to the pain and have just returned. When I get home I am so stiff and sore, luckly I only work 3 or 4 days a week which leaves my body time to recoup. For me PT worked the best. I am also taking fish oil pills and calium pills. I wish you much relief and returned joy. I understand this can be very depressing. Having a strong support system and people who love you helps. I have friends here on Pet Talk who lift my spirits everyday and I have my sister and my wonderful pets. Finding a hobby or something to look forward to helps me. I garden but move slowly. I try very hard to stay away from pain pills I am just not a pill popper however I do understand that there are days when you just can not take the pain and have to medicate. Best of luck to you. I hope you are better soon. Monica
