    Cat Food Recipe??

Anyone have recipes for cat food? With everything going on lately I am really considering not buying any food at all.Im thinking that maybe if I make my own my Felix will be more safe that way.The recent hard food Hills Prescription food recall really got me concerned. The recall is Hills Prescription m/d and my Felix is on Hills Prescription c/d (as well as fancy feast gravy wet food).Makes me think if one of the Hills Prescription food is affected why not the others?I am really scared now, there are more and more brands being added to the list,I sooner not buy any, only for what would I feed my kitty then? Anyones input would be appreciated.

    Thanks,Felix's Concerned Meowmie

Here is a link for the raw diet. I like this link because she gives photos of each step of the process.

    http://www.catnutrition.org/pictorial.html

You can click on "supplies" on the menu on the left to see which ingredients and supplements she uses.

She even tells you which grinder she uses, which blade, which containers, the whole bit.

Don't forget to check the "shortcuts" as well.

Even if you don't have a grinder, you can do some of it by hand. And the list of ingredients will be helpful. I knew taurine was critical for cat eye health; I didn't now you can easily get it in chicken livers.

You can find other sites by doing a google search. Put in feline raw diet. No quotes needed. Lots of hits.

Oh, someone commented that you may find a grinder at a resale store, Good Will or Salvation Army, etc. If you decide to go that route.

I got a sample of Innova at a different pet store today. Also, there is a new one called Origen, which is made right here in Alberta. NO grains....protein and veggies.

There is another one coming out of Ontario soon.

I read the labels and they are amazing. These foods are meant to be raw food in kibble form.

I don't have the time to make the food, but may buy some actual raw from a store - and there is a new Raw Food coop just starting up in Calgary.

Just like people food - let's get back to basics and rejuvenate our food. After digging compost into as many square acres of arable land as possible.

    Sorry...I digress ....

There are plenty of different recipes out there for a raw diet. I make it for most of my gang. I use a supplement along with raw meat, pumpkin, yogurt, apples, and carrots. This is the site I get my supplement from (and the gang really likes it)

I brown some ground chicken in olive oyl, add a touch of cheddar and then stand back, especially if Scrappy 2 and the Tubster are there at the same time.
They are great at swiping morsels of food.

Does Felix have a history of urinary crystals? If so, I would be very careful about making a homemade diet....in regards to magnesium content, resulting urine pH, etc. If your cat has any special dietary needs, I would consult a veterinarian for homemade recipes or a food therapy protocol. I work for a veterinarian trained in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and she does one-hour appointments to discuss food therapy and herbs for individual pets.

I don't have experience with raw, only homecooked. Two books with homecooked recipes for cats that I would recommend are:
Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets: the Healthful Alternative by Donald R. Strombeck
    &
Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats by Richard H. Pitcairn

Also switching a cat from addictive "crunchies" to foods with an entirely different texture can be very difficult. Be sure your cat never goes for more than 24 hours without food!

Many thanks to Roxyluvsme13 & k9krazee for my great new siggy!!

Gary, your recipe is certain to entice ANY kitty!

But I am sure you know you can't feed just this. They need certain vitamins and minerals, which you can get as supplements or from organ meats and such.

I know you know this' but someone reading this may not, so i thought I'd clarify it.

Gee, so many people are switching to raw, organic, holistic, home made. The pet food industry has taken a beating this time!

No Felix was put on the Hills perscription C/D by his vet when I got him neutered to help prevent the forming of crystals which are known to neutered males.
