    Torbie or Tabby?

    Hello,

I was looking at today's COTD (just adorable!) and was surprised they called the kitty a torbie. My kitty looks just like this kitty and my vets have always called her a brown mackeral tabby.

What are the distinguishing features of a torbie vs. a tabby?

    Thank you!

A torbie is named because it is a brown tabby with patches of orange. Can also be called a red patch tabby. Flutter has some orange in her fur, not too evident in the photo.

I'm Flutter's mom. Jen's right, Flutter has lots of orange in her. Wow, I had to dig for photos representing her orange spots. They don't come up too well in photos.

Can you see her orange blotches on her back? They're very subtle, but there. Her "Sister" in the one with the orange "heart" on her forehead

A Tortie is a cat mixed with orange. A torbie is a tabby that has some orange patches. A calico is a tortie with white. All three are somewhat related because of their coloring and all 3 are almost always females.

PS: Thanks for thinking my little princess is adorable

    Thank you!

Ok, that is much more clear now -- thank you to you both!

I think that Mitten has a little bit of orange in her but not as much as your pretty kitty I think she is a tabby cat through and through (with some jellicle in her as well, no doubt!)

This website is very helpful for identifying the different colors and patterns of cats. It has LOTS of good pictures.

    What Color Is My Cat?

Not all vets will get specific about coloring, just so they know who is who. Where I work the boss and the one receptionist tend to call all point marked cats either siamese or himalayin depending if they have long hair or short. lol

    BTW for color reference:

    Cami is Brown Classic Tabby

And Sassy & Sabrina are Black Tortishell

Cami, Sassy & Sabrina are beautiful! Thanks for the web link -- Mitten is definitely a brown mackerel/jellicle tabby (holy mackerel!)

    Thanks again!
