    Question About Poop!

Payson seems to poop a lot, I'd say around 4 times a day. Is this normal for a dog? We only feed him once a day in hopes that it will cut down the amount of poop, but it doesn't seem to help. Since this is our first dog we aren't really sure if this is normal. He is currently eating Nature's Recipe. Will a change in food help? There is a feed store down the road that sells Innova so I might try switching him over when he gets closer to finishing this bag of food (we just bought it so I don't want to waste it). Do you think that switching foods will help?

Natures Receipe use to be excellent, but they are now using a rendering plant, and the grains have risen. ( alias fiber) . I would change foods..

It's worth a shot.. 4 times a day does seem a bit much. When I switched Kai from Eukanuba to Innova, there was a HUGE difference!

Cant really be much help on health issues between foods, but cainan seems like his favorite thing IS to poop! almost everytime i let him out he poops. Yes he eats eukanuba but he seems healthy. doesnt get sick, really happy go lucky puppy, fecal sample is A-OK, everything seems perfect...just poops alot!
I look at it as it's better to have him going too much than not at all!

I agree- my dogs on raw poop twice a day( after they eat in the morning and after dinner). If they eat any kibble type, it increases to 3 times. ( early in the morning at let out, and after both meals. )

I don't know 4 times a day doesn't seem a lot to me. Beacan goes 3 times, and for some reason Pip goes anywhere from 4-5 times a day. Although I think that's cause he knows "if I do a doody I get a treat when I go in that house." I think he poops to poop....lol. Although my day does run funny. 9:30am-2am, so that might be why too.

Four times a day sounds like a lot to me, too. I don't really know anything about Natures Recipe, but I do think I remember reading that how much fiber and fillers, etc. in the dog's food will make a difference in how much they defecate. So changing over may be a good idea. The only thing I would say though is, don't wait until you finish the bag, get the Innova now so that you can mix it in with the Natures Recipe instead of a sudden change in diet. Good luck to you and Payson.

I have to agree, 4 times daily does seem like a lot.
Bailey is 22 months and he poops once a day and sometimes two, tops.

Chloe is 7 1/2 months and she goes twice a day, morning and late afternoon.

Maybe the food should be changed. A long time ago Bailey was on Eukanuba for a brief period and he pooped MUCH more than he does now after switching to a better food. Chloe has always been on the same food from the time she was weaned over to kibble.

Duke and Rocky poop twice a day, once in a great while 3 times, but mostly only twice.

Mine eat Timberwolf Organics and on average poop twice a day. Kiara and Mufasa poop more than Simba & Nala. Sometimes they only go once, sometimes more than twice. Depends on how many treats were given, too.

Thanks for making sure that I switch over gradually I think I'll wait until we get half way down the bag, as one bag of food lasts Payson about 2 months! So if I start the switch now it's going to take forever to get rid of that bag!

Thanks for the advice guys, sometimes Payson will poop as much as 5-6 times a day, but I think 4 is around the average. The main problem is that we still have lots of poop accidents in the house because we'll take him out and since he went poop and pee we figure he's good to go, but then an hour later when we aren't looking he'll poop again in the house (thankfully the house is tiled). Payson hates outside, so he won't let us know if he has to go. He'll go if we take him out, but he'll never let us know. Alexa and I just don't have the energy to take him out every single hour to see if he has to poop.

Kay I looked for the food that you suggested and they don't have any retailers in Tucson. I've heard good things about Innova? Do you think that is a good food?

I think the Innova carries some very quality food.

You may want to try Innova Evo Dog - It's grain free and may help produce less poopies.

Actually- mixing foods makes a different receipe. The way I know to have the best success is to- feed the last old food at half feeding ( the night time one) then feed late in the morning but half the normal amount of the new food. Feed again 1/2 amount that evening. Then the next day at normal rations of what you are supposed to feed with the new food.
Keep in mind what you are changing food- you will feed less- so read the bag..!
