    Tucked tail

I have a Male Mini Dachshund approximately 9 years old. He is tucking his tail as if he is scared but when we try to untuck it or lift it a little it hurts him. He is eating , and his normal life hasn't changed any. But when he run or barks it hurts and he stops and lays down. Can't think of anything he has done to hurt it, no swelling and goes to the bathroom okay. Any ideas?

Considering the breed, he could have hurt a disc in his back. If this continues, a trip to the vet is in order. How long has this being going on?
