Congratulations first of all on asking some questions before buying. Not every dog is a good fit for every person. I personally never pass up a chance to put in a pitch for poodles. They come in three sizes so there is a size for everyone. My first poodle was a toy poodle and that led to another toy and then later added minis and standards and, well, you can see that for me they are like potato chips. I just couldn't stop.
That said, there are grooming requirements that cannot be ignored. They need to be bathed and groomed at least once a month and their fur needs brushing in between as well. I chose to learn to do the grooming myself as it saves lots of money and is another opportunity to bond with my dogs. That is the only negative, in my opinion, to owning one of these wonderful dogs. They are smart as can be and train easily. They also don't shed or have *doggy odor* as some breeds do. There are other small dogs that I admire but none has stolen my heart like the poodle.
Welcome! I think we need more infomation to help you find the right dog...
How much time do you have to spend with the dog?
How much time do you have for grooming?
Do you have any time for doing dog activites such as agility or 4-H?
Do you want an entergetic dog or a more laid back one?
Thank you SO much kitty_cats_delight
for the UNBELIEVABLEY awesome signature!!
There's tonnes of small dogs. You need to think about how much you're willing to groom them, how much energy, ect. I suggest poodles. It seems there's a poodle for any lifestyle. They're very smart. Or some of the poodle mutts are prety cool too.
You haven't given us much information, so I suggest you do this. It is a lovely quiz that will match your lifestyle with a breed of dog. Happy searching.

WHIPPET
BOSTON TERRIER
BEAGLE
AUSTRALIAN KELPIE
STILL AVAILABLE BY E-MAIL
You should search around look up information about each type of dog, see which is suitable for you. Like for me I prefer pugs, and shih tzus. Both are my favorite and I know how to take care of them well. Well good luck on finding the one that you guys would love and take care of!

As a Pomeranian owner, I found that I had to put INFIRM or NOT ACTIVE (for my activity level) to ever get Pom to come up.Originally Posted by GreyhoundGirl
I'm skeptical of that selection process...
