Thread: outside potty training

    Question outside potty training

Koa recently joined our family (labrador dob 6/1/06). He was "paper" and "grass" trained when he came to live with us but we really want him to go on the pea gravel. He will absolutely hold it until he can go on the grass, which we won't allow, so he ends up going in his crate (defecating). To back up a little...we have blocked up his crate already so that it's just big enough for him to turnaround but he still will go inside it. HELP! How do we get him to finally accept the pea gravel so he won't "hold" it to go in his crate???? I'm very frustrating but also recognize that he's only 9 weeks tomorrow and we got him 5 days ago. Thank you!

What is the reason you dont' want him to go in the grass? It can't be healthy for him to hold it in all that time, and mos def not for him to go in his crate. Explain further...............

The pup is 9 weeks old &" already trained to grass and paper " and you
are frustrated because he won't change NOW and go on pea gravel ?
You said also you had him a whole 5 days? Give the baby a break & take
more time to teach him yet another place to go. Look up puppy training tips
from a web search for good trainers. Good luck with this.

Take one of his piles and leave it in your gravel so he knows where to go. Take him out on the leash where the pile is and he will get the picture. You know how dogs love to smell everyones letters and boxes so to say. He will recognize his own and should start using that area.

    pea gravel training

Why don't you try putting a piece of paper for him to go on in the pea gravel area til he gets used to the feel of the pea gravel. The more times he goes out there the more he will get used to it and, think of it this way, the paper isn't so bad to clean up. Just put some paper by the door and grab a sheet when you go out. Keep saying "go potty" as he is on the paper. Then try without the paper after awhile. He should get the idea.
