For those of you in SoCal:
CORONADO, Calif. (June 29, 2006) – Can your pup hang 10… errrr 20? If you think so, don Fido in his finest doggie board shorts and head to Loews Coronado Bay Resort & Spa on August 20 for the nation’s first surfing competition for man’s best friend.

The “Ruff Riders” event kicks off at 9 a.m. at the Coronado Dog Beach (a five-minute drive from Loews) with surfing lessons for less experienced canines eager to catch their first wave. Once the competition begins, each dog will have three chances to impress a panel of professional surfing instructors. Dogs will be scored on their confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to grip it and rip it. In the end, only the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will score a ton of cool prizes and the bragging rights that come with owning the waves of San Diego.

After the competition, dogs and owners are invited to end the day on the right foot (or paw) at Loews Coronado Bay Resort’s reception and awards ceremony from 3 to 5 p.m. Hungry surf dogs will chow down on the resort’s signature surf ‘n’ turf dish, a finely-prepared mixture of beef tenderloin and salmon, while owners sip Mutt-tinis and enjoy hosted Southern California-style cuisine. Additional doggie diversions for pups and owners will be endless, including a furry fashion show with doggie couture by Lucky Dog Boutique and book signing of TCB-Café Publishing’s “The Dog’s Guide to Surfing,” a unique book about the surf dog lifestyle.

The “Ruff Riders” event stems from an overwhelming response to Loews Coronado Bay Resort’s Su’ruff Camp package, which was named “an amazing thing to do with your dog” by Life magazine and Modern Dog magazine. Since Su’ruff Camp debuted in January 2006, more than 40 packages have been sold. In addition to surf lessons for dogs, the one-night stay includes pet room service, choice of doggie board shorts or a surfer bandana from Lucky Dog Boutique and copy of “The Dog’s Guide to Surfing.”

Registration for the “Ruff Riders” event begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Coronado Dog Beach on Sunday, August 20. Surf lessons will be led by Coronado Surfing Academy from 9 to 10:30 a.m. followed by the competition from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The reception and awards ceremony will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on Loews Coronado Bay Resort’s Bayside Terrace. Shuttle transportation from Loews to the Coronado Dog Beach will be available. The cost is $25 for adults (includes one hosted Mutt-tini) and $10 for children. All proceeds will benefit PAWS of Coronado, a non-profit animal welfare organization. To register, please call 619-424-4000 ext. 6048.
