My dad is very sick....

Sorry for not being here as much as I used to be....!
My dad is very sick, and we go every 3 days to the hospital, taking turns with my sister & brother!

He got 90 in January and was still good for a man of that age!
So in February he left for Turkey for about one month; together with other elderly people. His sister & husband (88) also went!
But after 1 week it went wrong.... His sister found him on the floor of his bathroom twice! The second time he acted rather strange and was talking gibberish...
He was brought to the local hospital then.
We were told not to go there, so we didn't...
They told us many different stories, we didn't really know what was wrong.
After 2 weeks he was brought back to Belgium with a "medical flight": him, a doctor and a nurse.
We were so chocked when we finally saw him...!
It was obvious that he hadn't be washed all the time he was in hospital, he was dehydrated too, but wasn't allowed to drink anything before the doctors here were sure he could still swallow well.
His lips were covered with dried blood, and his mouth looked all red inside. Poor dad!!!
His whole body was "blue" and his arms was in such bad shape because of needles and other stuff.
After many tests, we finally learned that they gave him overdoses of bloodthinner (in Turkey), which caused his inner body bleed inside on really lots of places!!
We also are sure now that he got a seizure.
The worst though is that they found out here that his aorta (main artery) is in very bad shape; it is calcified completely, cholesterol too, and it has many very very thin places; Those can break anytime, which will cause an instant death...! I hope you can all understand what I am trying to describe, my English is not really great when talking about medical stuff...
All we can do now is going as often as possible (it's a 1 hour drive)
They are givng some excercises to get in better shape, because he cannot stand on his feet anymore. Of course they must be very careful , regarding that artery!!
He was till living on his own, but that won't be possible anymore....! So the hospital is trying to find a place for him in a home .

Oh my!~ I am so sad for your Dad and for you, going through this.

Do they think they will do surgery to replace the aorta?

I am so sorry to read your father is so sick, and no thanks to those doctors in Turkey:( I hope he does better here and I really hope they can possibly do something regarding his artery!

Your poor dad and poor you! I hope he does recover and gets some strength back. I hope there are medications that will help dissolve the stuff in that artery. If he gets well enough to have an angioplasty, that will help a lot.

Such a nightmare that your Dad has gone thru. Prayers that his doctors at home will be able to reverse some of the damage done, and get him feeling as well as can be expected.

So sorry about your father what a brave adventerous man to go on a trip like that at 90, he must be a great guy, I hope he gets better soon.

No, an operation can NOT be done because of his high age...! Such a replacement of the artery is a very delicate operation, he wouldn't survive this......

This is dad! First picture is from November last year, the second was taken on January 19th, a few days before his 90th birthday. He looks so good on thiese 2 pictures, who woulfd have guessed that he would be so sick only 2 months later....?!

What a fine-looking gentleman! Prayers that at least some of the damage can be reversed and he will regain some health and strength.

I agree, your dad doesn't look 90 at all, looking spry and healthy, what a shame things like this have to happen.

I'm so sorry to hear of your Dad's health problems. He looks the picture of health in those photos.

Today we entered dad's room and walked straight to his bed; But it was EMPTY.... :confused:
At first I thought "oh no, he hasn't passed away??"; but then I looked to the table in the back of the room, and there he was!! Sitting on a normal chair, reading his newspaper!!!
He was bent over a bit, but that's to prevent him loosing his balance!!
I was soooooooooo happy to find him like that :)!!!!

But that wasn't all!!
He asked us if we would like to go the restaurant on the ground floor to have a drink or a snack!
I thought he would ask a wheelchair to go there, but then he pointed at a rollator which was parked in a corner.

Then he got on his feet, and off we went!! Nearly 20 meter to the elevator, then into the restaurant to a vacant table.
We got us all a coffee; he asked for a cornetto too (ice-cream!)
After this we walked all the way back to his room!
Of course he was tired then an went into his bed right away;
But hey, I was and am soooo happy!!
I told him several times how proud and happy I was, and he gave a a smile from ear to ear!!!
He is getting his strenght back, that's for sure!!

He has ups and downs. One day he is in a good mood, walks with his rollator; and the other day he doesn't feel like doing anything, isn't hungry, etc...
It wiil take him a very long time to get better! We mostly don't want him to overdo things...
