This looks like a good time to recommend a beautiful and moving book on the work dogs do for us:CAROLINE HEBARD AND HER SEARCH-AND-RESCUE DOGS by Hank Whittemore and Caroline Hebard.
It was published in 1996 and may be hard to find but well worth the effort. Amazon.com has some paperbacks left.
