I have a cockatiel that will be 23 years old in February.
She doesn't fly anymore and is constantly stretching.
I can't tell if she is pain but still craves affection if I go and get her.
She squawks anytime I am out of her sight.
Is it time to put her down?
I have never owned an elderly bird, so cannot help you, but will say a little prayer for you and for her.
Perhaps you should have her vet checked. Just because she isn't flying, isn't a sign of sickness. My girl that I had for 12+ years didn't fly the last few years - but I have no idea how old she was, since she was an adult when I acquired her. If your girl is still eating, she probably doesn't feel all that bad, but should be checked anyway, due to her age.
Have her checked by an avian vet. I would NOT put her down just because she isn't flying. She may have some good years ahead of her still. Enjoy her for however long she is blessed with life.
She also sleeps about 20 hours a day.
My 16 yr old Pomeranian sleeps much of the time too, but that's no reason to put her down.
I agree it may be best to get her examined by a good bird vet, just to be sure what, if anything, is going on medically. Birds hide illness so well, you never know!
