Hey, all. I just learned to knit this past Christmas. I started with scarves, and, have knitted four so far. I love it! I just picked up a product called the Knifty Knitter and am working on my third hat, now. But, what I want to try and make is a pom pom for the top of the hat. I know there's a pom pom maker, which I'll probably end up buying...but, for now, I just want to see if anyone can instruct me on how to make the pom pom and how to knit it to the top of the hat. :) I think I found instructions on how to make the pom pom, but, not really how to sew it to the hat itself. Any suggestions or sites would be appreciated! I love this hobby, and, would like any and all advice. :)

cut a piece of cardboard about 3" long and 2" wide at the half way point cut a small slot . wrap strands ( will depend on your yarn size but) about 25 wraps . now cut free from ball and cut a small 2" piece if yarn put it through the slot amd around back through the other side . Pull this tight as you can tie it off cut the wrpped ends . and Viola' you have a pom pom

Sweet. I'm going to try it! Any suggestions on sewing/knitting it to the hat? I'm so excited about learning all this! I made an infant hat for my friend's new baby, and, a child's hat for my 5-year-old niece and just finished a hat for myself! YAY hats! ;)

Do you have any pictues of the hats, Kari? I'd love to see 'em. I've always wanted to try knitting.

Not yet! It's so much fun! I seriously need to sit down and take pictures of the things I've made so far...I might do that soon...if I get crazy, I might just do it tonight. ;) I kinda want to take the pictures of the people wearing them, but, that might not happen very soon. I meant to take a picture of my niece wearing hers, it was so cute on her! But, maybe I'll just take a few of what I have, and, of the one I just finished. My very first knitted hat JUST FOR ME. Hee hee, I'm wearing it right now. :)

leave the ends long enough on the tie off and put them through the top of hat to the inside and tie them off in side.

To make a pom-pom, cut two circles of cardboard, the diameter depends on the size of the pom-pom to be made, and should be equal to the size of the finished pom-pom plus approximately ½" for trimming, plus the diameter of the centre hole. eg: For a pom-pom 1½" across, the circles would be 1½" plus ½" plus ½" for centre hole, equals 2½". Cut a round hole in the centre; the size of the hole is approximately a quarter of the finished pom-pom. Wind the wool round and round the cardboard until the centre hole is completely filled up.
Place the point of the pair of scissors between the two pieces of cardboard and cut around, keeping scissors between two circles of cardboard all the time. Using a double strand of wool, wrap round between the two circles of cardboard, knot firmly, and take away cardboard - see diagram. Trim pom-pom
