chewing on paw

Sammy chews on his back paw every day. He chews on it like a chew toy. I thought maybe he had something stuck in it so I checked and there is nothing there. Does he just have an itch... or is he bored?

I had the same problem with my dog so I told the vet. He said they will do that from time to time if there nails are to long and sure enough she had been biting her nails. All we had to do was cut them and she stopped.The picture below is the dog I'm talking about. ;)

Oh, well, I guess he's close to needing his nails trimmed.

Dusty chewed his legs because he had allergies and was itchy.

Adele chews on her paws too. She doesn't have any allergies and I keep her nails fairly short, I think it is more of a comfort to her.

She usually (lightly, thank goodness! I don't want her hurting herself) licks/chews on her paws when she is settled on the couch for the evening and comfortable.

I was going to mention allergies too as a possibility. I had a silver mini poodle several years ago who occasionally chewed on a spot on her leg. She actually caused her hair to grow in darker in that particular spot. The vet said she probably did it out of boredom. :rolleyes:

Allergies are fairly common in Cockers, so maybe that's the case. I will mention it to the vet when Sam goes to his next appointment.
