I'm leaving tomorrow for a week with my family. My Dad offered an all expenses paid ski trip in Jasper. How could I refuse that!? So since this is my last chance to post for awhile, here is an assortment of pictures taken over the last few days.

My big, sweet doofus, Founder actually looking calm and dignified for a change!

Chase the gentleman dog. He's such a polite boy, always crossing his paws when he lays down.

Preacher enjoying a moose bone. He may be old and blind, but his nose still works great. He can sniff out food from a mile away! His teeth still work too--that bone didn't last long!

Daisy was over for a visit the other day. Actually, she's here again right now! She might as well spend the day playing here instead of wandering the neighborhood or laying outside my gate.

Pingo playing with Heyoka and Daisy. Not a great pic, but Pingo is just learning how to play like this. Usually she runs away when the dogs start wrestling. I think it's cute that at almost 9 years old she's finally connecting with her inner puppy!

And finally, a happy Sundin earlier today, after his first run leading my team!

That's all....see you in a week or so!

What is baited water???

This time of year the dogs' water freezes so fast that they don't always get enough time to drink. A sled dog has to stay hydrated in order to work effectively and safely. So twice a day I take around "baited water". The bait is something tasty soaked in the water. I use chunks of meat or kibble. The dogs always drink it immediately.

oh I also saw sundin's missing part of tongue - unique - anything happened? I hope that's not the way they sign they're fixed?

They all eat raw meat 3 or 4 times a week. Usually it's moose, but sometimes bison, caribou and occasionally beef.

I don't know exactly what happened, but I suspect he got it stuck on part of his chain in his old dog yard in cold weather. It's an old injury and well healed. Happened long before he got here. Sundin actually isn't neutered, but now that I can catch him, he will be soon!

Thanks for the fix. I just have to keep coming back to this thread until you get back. So...hmm...does that mean the dogs will be alone this week? Hmmm...Oooh Antare, come here baby, look at this nice big bone...(snatches Antare ;)).

Alone!? Oh, that's funny. I can't imagine the chaos that would cause! Stuart will be here taking care of them, with some help from his Dad.

Only kidding, I knew Stuart was staying home (and I remembered that his father comes over every day), but it was worth a try anyway. :) How is Stuart's...was it his hand?

Edited to Add: Oh I just saw your reply, Gina. Thanks. ;)

If you could get close enough to Antare to snag him, I'd probably faint and you could walk right off with him. He's a pretty timid little guy.

Stuart's hand is improving. He got the stitches out a couple days ago and the pin comes out in 10 days or so. As long as he's careful and doesn't bump it, the pain is much better too.

His Dad came over tonight and followed me around through the feeding routine so he can do that if Stuart's hand won't allow it. The feed bucket weighs about 25 pounds and you kinda need two hands--one to carry, one to scoop. Setting the bucket down to scoop every time would just be annoying, especially for the dogs! I don't think they'll get much meat while I'm gone. Stuart can't use an axe yet. The meat is frozen in big blocks and I chop off meal size chunks. Hopefully one of them will scoop the poop--a week without scooping would be a little long!

Beautiful pictures of your gang! My, but Daisy is a pretty girl, nice to see she still visits. Have fun on your trip, and be careful when you come home - there'll probably be a husky stampede to welcome you!!!
