Roxy always wears leather collars, and I wish I could get her something a Tad bit fancier. BUT It would have to be very strong and not easily breakable. It would also have to be same available at Petsmart and preferably not over $20. Any suggestions?

you can get leather ones that have stuff on them, embroidery (sp?) or in different colors than usual, or get her a nylon one they come in many shades and patterns

I personally wouldn't spend $20 on a collar. ;)

For roxy's safety the leather may be the best thing. Just make sure its not cracked or anything.

Leather is what people usually get as a step up to nylon

The pretty leather ones are so expensive though...But I saw several I liked.

i suggested nylon because they have more variety and are a bit less expensive but i agree on leather, the links show some very nice leather collars.

does it has to be from petsmart?? cant you buy it online?? i´m sure there are plenty more places where to buy from

Thanks! I'm tired of her looking so boring with a plain leather brown one. I would love to get her a purple one, but all the purple leather ones I like are way out of my price range.

Here's some of the ones I like. This is Roxy so much, but way too much for a collar.

I wouldn't go for the black one with white dots.

It would NOT be good for an outside dog. It is very flimsy leather. I had one for Nala, who is a 99.9% inside dog, (she refuses to even go outside sometimes!) and it got horribly worn out. Just warning you because you will be buying another one very soon if you go with that.

The only problem with that is it has a easy release thing...I'm afraid Roxy would tear it loose and run off...

Are they strong enough to stand a 55ish pound dog?

Yep they are used for working dogs, dogs that are chained up at the sale yards, on the backs of utes, to fences when not working etc.

I am currently looking for a link for you to check out ;). Will post it when i find it.

Any place that stocks cattle & horse feed, and working dog food should stock them and similar collars. Tinny has that collar in yellow it looks terrible on her ;).

I was looking at some of the links you posted, I was just going to mention to try to get a wider type of collar, some of those pics were too thin. With her chain being attached the thin ones could break easily and also damage her neck if she pulled hard if she saw something cool and ran to the end of her chain. The wider ones distribute the pull exerted on her neck so it wouldn't hurt her accidentally. I think the pic of the nylon one that was posted looked pretty good that way.

Roxyluvsme13
02-04-2006, 11:31 AM
Yeah, I thought of that after I posted those...If I cant find the nylon one, then I'm getting one of the Deerskin ones. (if you have any idea what I'm talking about?)

If strength is a concern, be sure to read the tag on the collar. Some are only rated for inside use. Since mine live outdoors 24/7, I use the nylon collars with flat metal closures. These metal closures are also the ones recommended for dogs that are chained. You should be able to get one at Petsmart for $20 or less.

Here's one similar to the one Rhi posted.. (Here's looks like it'd be stronger for an outside dog, though.)

Yep, but like I said - Rhi's is a lot better. Simba's first collar was the one you posted from Petsmart. The holes got worn out and stretched over time and it would just fall off. See how Rhi's has like a protective metal loop around the holes? I would go with something like that.

I would just go to your local petsmart and look around - they don't always have stock in the store of what they have on their website.

Agreed. That is what we're going to do tomorrow. But my moms buying Roxy's collar, (she volunteered), so we wont be getting it till Friday, but we're going to look tomorrow. I know they have those collars, but I didnt know how they would stand on durability. They look thick and everything, but Roxy's pretty strong.

I wouldn't trust a deerskin collar farther than I could throw it, and I can't throw very well.

Rien had a nylon husky-style (rather than greyhound style) martingale until about a month ago when I got him a leather spiked collar for a late christmas gift. For a dog that's chained, I'd go with COW LEATHER, very thick. A thick nylon collar with reinforced holes would work as well.

Her safety should be your first concern, aesthetics comes second.

Her safety IS my first concern, thats why I asked everybody what they thought. I dont know, they may not have half the stuff they have online, so I'll just see what they have.

Ok! I went to our Petsmart today, and honestly they didnt have half the collars they had online. I was really thinking about the bamboo collar(the one with the built in leash) it looked pretty strong. But we're going back on Friday, and we're going to ask someone what they recommend.
