Today it's been dark & cloudy, and rainy almost all day long.
I looked out the front window about 5pm and saw an opossum
creeping around my front porch.I thought they only came out
at night. Now, I'm afraid to let the dogs out in the back yard.
I can just imagine going out side(in the rain) with a flash lite to protect
my pupsters. :D

That is scary! We have them around here. Our pups meeting wildlife is not a good thing! I took Lacey out one night, I think last summer and there was one right outside our fence! She took off after it and it didn't move, that's when I knew it wasn't a cat. I told Lacey to come and got her back in the house. This possum could go under our fence that's why I was so scared. I worry everytime I take the dogs out at night, even with the fence. We also have skunks, groundhogs and racoons here.
As far as one being out at 5:00, even if it was cloudy and rainy, hmmm, I don't know about that. I'd sure keep an eye out for that possum.

That's scary! I hope the opposum goes away so the dogs can be put safely in the yard.

We're full of critters too. Luckily, I can smell the skunks occassionally, (in the mornings)but never saw one. I guess I should be more careful. The second I open the back door, K-lo is off like a rocket to check out her territory. She's come *this* close, but never caught anything.

Woe to any skunk or possum who gets caught in Star's "jaws of death"! She's a very efficient hunter, and I try to keep her from tangling with wildlife, but often they come into the kennel or she dashes around the corner and grabs them in 2 seconds when she's out... But I would be worried about seeing an animal like a possum in broad daylight, not a good sign. A guy at our dogpark lost his dog when it contracted hepatitus from a possum.

I'm mostly afraid of my dogs catching some disease from these ugly
critters.Didn't see any last night when they were outside. I waited right
inside the storm door just in case. It was hard enough keeping
one dog(Buddy) away from them, but now it's two. :D

Our spring time temperatures are supposed to change back to winter
tonight so maybe they'll hibernate or something. I hope.

That is scary! we live near a canal and we often see opossums walking near the canal. astra has killed a few mice, some rabbits and i think a bird before. she is a very nasty(but good) hunter.

I wonder if someone disturbed the possums nest?
I was shocked to see a mother possum with her babies
in day time in my back yard.
Some neighbors were having bushes and trees cut down and
the possums nest was destroyed. :(
She was trying to protect her babies from Rocky.
She was wounded, and I was able to save a couple of
her babies and bring them to her. The mother never
even hissed at me. Her babies climbed up on her.
I was on the phone trying to find a vet
that would take them. (which none would)
By the time I got off the phone, she had climbed over over the fence.
I can only hope she and her remaining babies were ok.
(especially because everyone seems to have dogs in their yards)

Where I live we do not have a problem with possums carrying diseases
such as rabies.

KYS,
There is a small cross street about half block from my house & I
noticed a few days ago that someone had cut down a lot of trees
and brush from the back yard. I have seen possums (dead))on that
side street before. Thanks for the info, I'll bet thats where they came
from. It would really upset me if I saw a mom & babies in danger. :(
