What age do you think I should nueter Sammy, my cocker spaniel? He will be 5 months on the 14th.

If it were me, I'd have him neutered asap.

I agree with wolf_Q, it might be easier on Sammy while he is still very young.

I agree with what is posted above. I would get him fixed soon as you can.

Some rescues neuter/spay 6 week old pups. Molly is approx. 4 months right now but the pound director scheduled her spaying 2 months from now. No idea why. If it were up to me, I would have scheduled it ASAP.

ASAP! Roscoe wasn't neutered until he was a little over 3 years, and we have had many behavioral problems with him. Our trainer thinks that a lot of it has to do with the age he was neutered at.

I'll most likely be getting Kaige neutered next month, he'll be about 7.5-8 months old then.
I usually reccomend neutering at about 6 months, but for an experienced owner I prefer they wait until they are at least 6 months. I just personally beieve that it has to affect their health slightly. I personally like to wait until the dog is full grown BUT I work with him EVERYDAY ALLDAY, he goes to work with me even, we are constantly socializing & training. If I couldn't work with him so much to keep the associated behaviors at bay you'd be sure that I would neuter by the time they are 6 months of age. :D

The bigger the breed the longer I like to wait.

If you can't devote a LOT of your time AND aren't experienced with training AND aren't active in obedience classes I suggest you neuter him no later than 6 months of age.

I also forgot to add that if you do decide to wait you also have to make sure you keep your dog under complete control, NEVER allow them out of your site or off a lead either.

5 months is a good age for a cocker pup to get neutered.

I agree, the sooner the better.

The sooner the better.

Nala was spayed around 8 weeks.
Simba was neutered around 4 months.
Kiara was spayed around 15 weeks.

I think there is nothing wrong if you had it done now. I don't believe it effects their health at all.

Well even Molli isn't spayed yet. We are having a very hard time finding a local vet who does it al least within our money range. And no humane societies nueter or spay around us.

I live in Little Falls, a longgg way from Duluth. Where is Makinen? Little Falls is between the bigger cities of Brainerd and St. Cloud.

Try mapquest.com to see if it is near your house :)

Since Cockers aren't a large breed I think he would have been fine being neutered as young as 4 months. For larger breeds I think it's better to wait longer, but for a Cocker you could go ahead and have it done. Since Mollie isn't spayed you want to do it ASAP before he hits sexual maturity and she goes into heat!

I agree. I didn't realize that molly wasn't spayed yet. I'd really be looking into getting her spayed ASAP, the longer she waits the more of a chance you have of her getting cancer or the like AND even possibly puppies.

They both should be fixed asap! :D

I drove an hour to have Zam spayed at a low cost spay/neuter clinic. I'd rather drive the distance than risk her having babies.
